Established in 1925, Emily Carr University of Art & Design is one of the oldest post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. It is the only institute that focuses solely on professional education and learning in the arts, media, and design. ECU also has a broad range of labs and studios including Health Design Lab, DESIS Lab, and Print Media Studio. The namesake, Emily Carr emerged as a vanguard, an iconic Canadian female artist and writer, inspired by the Pacific Northwest environment with reverence for the rich indigenous rich cultures here. Emily Carr was an independent woman and a Westerner who gained prominence when Westerns Canadians and women artists were not recognized internationally.

Emily Carr University of Art & Design was established in 1925 as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. It was named after the Canadian artist Emily Carr in 1978.

Financial Aid and Scholarships at ECUAD

The Financial Aid and Awards Office at ECUAD offers entrance scholarships to international students. These scholarships cover a significant portion of the first-year tuition fees of students. Several entrance scholarships ranging from $2000 to $5000 are awarded to international students to study at any level. Some of the scholarships for Emily Carr University of Art & Design international students are:

  • CIBC Award for Excellence Scholarship: This scholarship is offered to students selected on the basis of academic and artistic merit. 2 awards worth $2,500 each are awarded to deserving students.
  • Renée Van Halm + Pietro Widmer Entrance Scholarship: This $1000 Entrance Scholarship is awarded to a student entering the undergraduate Foundation program. The student is selected based on academic and artistic merit.
