What is Olympiad Exam?

Academic Olympiad exams are organized (by any Private organization or Government Organization) to encourage the students in various subjects such as Language Exams, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Junior Science and Astronomy.

Participating in Olympiad Exams at the National or International level is considered a tremendous academic accomplishment for a student and is deemed to be valuable worldwide.

9. HBCSE

  • The idea of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) started in the late 1960s when some scientists at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) decided to improve the quality of science taught in India.

  • The program started with these scientists teaching students in Mumbai and a few places in rural Madhya Pradesh.

  • That idea grew to become HBCSE in 1974, which is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). HBCSE works on the improvement of science and mathematics education and to bring out quality education material.

  • At present, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. To reach its goal, HBCSE does several interrelated activities. They are:

10. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY):

  • KVPY is an on-going National fellowship Program in Basic Sciences which is initiated and funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract highly motivated students for pursuing basic science degree courses and research careers in science and Mathematics subject.

11. National Olympiad Foundation (NOF):

National Olympia Foundation constitutes docking of academic talent and social entrepreneurship helping the ability to come out from the walls of the classroom.

  • National Olympiad Foundation conducts one of its own GLOBAL talent search exams where the resources are utilized for students in need who are ignorant about education.

13. NMMS

NMMS is the Scholarship exam that is conducted in every state.

  • The Government Sponsored Scheme “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS)” was first launched in May 2008.

  • The objective of the NMMS scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to arrest their drop out of class VIII and encourage them to continue studying at the secondary stage.

  • Scholarship of Rs. 12,000/- per annum (Rs.1000/- per month) is awarded to selected students every year to study in classes from IX to XII in State Government Schools.

14. NTSE

  • The Government of India established the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in the year 1961 to bring about qualitative improvement in school education in the country.

  • The council started several programs towards its vision, and one such program was the identifications and the nurturing of talented students and was called the National Science Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS).

15. Technothlon

Technothlon is a competition conducted for school students internationally by the student body of IIT Guwahati. Starting with a group of students in a small room in 2004 to “Inspire Young Minds.” The competition started with students in the city of Guwahati and has expanded to more than 400 cities in the past 14 years with various centers abroad.

The championship is conducted in two rounds:

  1. Prelims: Prelim is a written exam which is done all over India in multiple schools in July.

  2. Mains: Mains is a competition where teams participate in different events conducted in Techniche, the Techno-Management festival of IIT Guwahati.

Questions are trickier and conceptual based which require the students to have a wide thought process to solve the variety of problems based on logic and concepts.

4. How to Participate in Olympiad Exams?

A prospectus containing the registration forms of all exams conducted by the respected foundation will be sent to all schools registered with that particular foundation. Schools that are not registered may also request for prospectus by sending an e-mail to that Olympiad conducting foundation.

Either go to the official website of the Olympiad exam conducting foundation to download the Official Olympiad admit card or it will be mailed to the respected school authorities. (i.e students can ask their resected school authorities to provide Olympiad Exams, Admit Card)

9. What is Olympiad syllabus?

Olympiad Exams Syllabus will be the school syllabus (i.e syllabus of the board with which school is affiliated with be it CBSE, ICSE, or any other state board)

10. How to prepare for Olympiad Exams?

11. We have less than 10 students in our school who are interested to take part in a SOF IGKO Olympiad Exam. Can we still enroll for the test?

For less than 10 students in a school, it is not viable for the Foundation to hold the IGKO Olympiad Exams. Hence at least 10 students should be enrolled from a school so that a school becomes a center. 

12. Can I take part in more than one Olympiad exams?

Yes, Students can take part in more than one Olympiad Exams. Although conducted by the same Foundation, NCO, NSO, IMO, IEO, IGKO & ICO are entirely different competitions. Students can register for all the Olympiads Exams in a year as per class eligibility.

13. When are the results of the Olympiad Exams declared?

Results of the Olympiad Exams are declared within eight weeks of each examination. The results will be sent to the concerned schools. The Olympiad results are also made available on the individual Organization website. 

14. I have already appeared for the Olympiad Exams while I was in a lower class? Can I give Olympiad Exams again?

Certainly. This will allow you to improve your previous Olympiad Exams rankings, and if you are successful in doing so, you will again be eligible for certificates and prizes. 

15. Can I skip any questions during the test?

Yes, But many Olympiad exams do not carry negative marks. In that case, try to avoid skipping questions.
