Scholarships for Indian Students in USA

The US has some of the most high ranking universities in the world. However, studying in the US can be expensive even for domestic students. The full tuition fee for international students is 30-50% more than the domestic tuition fees. The international students will also have to arrange for living expenses which range between $1,000 and $2,000 or more per month. The US offers a wide range of scholarships to its international students to ease some of their financial burdens. The Indian students need to apply before a certain deadline and plan well accordingly. 

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Scholarships:

Apart from a good academic score, the scholarships also depend on the destination, chosen subject, and level of study. Sometimes factors like extracurricular activities, volunteering, and achievements also benefit the students. In some scholarships, only the applications are enough while in research-centric programs, the students have to submit written assignments. The requirements include:

  • Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship: This grant is used to provide scholarships to students in six main subject areas that are peace and conflict prevention/resolution, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economics, and community development. The amount provided is between $15,000 and $30,000.
  • The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program: This scholarship is designed for students from international countries who wish to pursue non-degree graduate study programs in the US to gain practical experience for 10 months. The focus areas for this scholarship are urban and regional planning, HIV/AIDS policy and prevention, economic development, and others. The Minimum amount offered is $15,000, and the maximum is $30,000.
  • Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship Program: This scholarship is awarded to 5 students from India every year. They are provided a grant of $150,000 for a two-year business management course from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

US Visa for International Students

The USA is known to be the study abroad education hub for students from all over the world to pursue their higher education. The international student should first be accepted by any school/ university under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The international student office of the respective institution then sends the Form I-20 to the student which is the paper record of their information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database. Form I-20 is one of the most important documents needed to apply for a student visa. 

Visa Options for International Students:

The US Government issues three different student visas such as F1 Visa, J1 Visa, and M1 Visa for international students coming to the US to pursue their higher education. 

F1 Visa: The F1 Visa is offered to students pursuing a full-time degree or academic program in the US and is valid for the entire duration of the course of study. It is the most common type of student visa offered to international students. The students with the F1 Visa are allowed for Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months after completion of graduation. This gives the students a temporary employment permission to get practical experience in their respective field of study.

J1 Visa: The J1 Visa is an Intern category visa of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program given to international students and recent graduates for a temporary stay in the US to gain knowledge of US business practice and culture.
