Francis Marion is a public university in Florence, South Carolina. It is named in honour of American Revolutionary War Brigadier General Francis Marion. It is one of South Carolina’s first 13 public universities. Its departments are divided into three schools and one college.

The Francis Marion University came into being in 1857 when the University of Carolina set up a freshman college in the Florence County Library. In 1992, FMU gained university status and changed its name to what we know today.
