Fairmont State University is a public university in Fairmont. Fairmont State University has two campuses, the Gaston Caperton Centre is located in Clarksburg and the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center in Bridgeport.

Fairmont State University was the first private normal school in West Virginia. It was set up to train teachers in Fairmont in 1865 by John N. Boyd. It was known as the West Virginia Normal School at Fairmont.
