The grading system for the HSC board exams was developed by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board in 2011, and since then it has been continued for the consecutive years. The GSEB HSC grading system has been divided into 9 grades.
The grades range from A1 to E2 in which A1 is the highest grade and E2 is the lowest grade. Students receiving an A1 grade are considered as excellent students and the students receiving a grade less than D are considered as fail. These grades are allotted according to the marks received by the students. The grading system can be explained from the following table:
| Marks | Grade |
| 91 - 100 | A1 |
| 81 - 90 | A2 |
| 71 - 80 | B1 |
| 61 - 70 | B2 |
| 51 - 60 | C1 |
| 41 - 50 | C2 |
| 33 - 40 | D |
| 21 - 32 | E1 |
| 00 - 20 | E2 |
Thus, if a student gets an E1 or E2 grade, he/she will have to repeat the class in the next year.
