CAT 2020 Percentile Calculation

The examinees should now understand the difference between the scaled score and percentile in the CAT exam to know the CAT exam cut off required by various colleges.

Step 1: Total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT including both morning & afternoon sessions are calculated.

Step 2: All candidates who appeared for CAT will be assigned a rank, based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section. In the case of two or more candidates obtaining identical scaled scores in the QA section, identical ranks are assigned to those candidates. As an illustration, suppose exactly two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then both of those candidates are assigned a rank of 1. Moreover, the candidate(s) obtaining the second-highest scaled score in the QA section are assigned a rank of 3 and so on.

Step 3: Percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section is calculated as

P = [(N−r) N] × 100.

Step 4: Calculated percentile score (P) of a candidate is rounded-off up to two decimal points.

CAT 2020 Normalization Process

CAT 2020 evaluation or CAT 2020 normalization is a process that is used to follow fairness and equality in comparison to performances of the candidates across different test sessions.
The official website describes CAT 2020 Normalization as "CAT 2020 will be conducted in three sessions. Three different Test Forms shall be administered in three different Test Sessions. To ensure fairness and unbiasedness in comparison of performances of the candidates in different test sessions, the scores of the candidates shall be subjected to a process of Normalization". The process mentioned above will be in effect while calculating the CAT 2020 result of the students who will appear for the test.

Working of the CAT 2020 Normalization Process

In the CAT 2020 Normalization process, the students are scaled based on different test batches, locations, etc. On accumulating all these scores, a scaled score is obtained and converted into the percentile. Some of the candidates can encounter a hard set of papers in one batch while others encounter an easier exam as compared to the former. To eliminate this difference and be fair to every student, the process of normalization is done.

CAT normalization process is an established path for comparing candidate scores across multiple forms and is similar to those being adopted in other reputed academic selection tests conducted across India, such as GATE i.e. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. For normalization across all sections, we use the percentile equivalence.

CAT 2020 Reservation

As per Government of India's norms, IIMs have reserved 15% seats for SC candidates, 7.5% seats for ST candidates, and 27% seats for NC-OBC candidates, 5% of seats are reserved for Benchmark Disabilities Persons. IIMs also provide reservation of 10% to the candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in terms of seat availability.
