FAQs on IISc Bangalore

Q: Is there a course available at IISc Bangalore after the 12th Standard?

A: Yes, a 4 year Bachelor of Science (Research) program is offered at IISc Bengaluru. The candidate must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 12 Class and qualify in one of the national tests – KVPY/  IIT-JEE (Main) or (Advanced)/ NEET.

Q: Is IISc Bangalore better than IIT?

A: Whether IISc is "better" depends on your career goals. If your passion lies in pure science, fundamental research, and academic innovation, IISc is generally considered superior to the IITs. However, for traditional undergraduate engineering and corporate management, top IITs like Bombay or Delhi might offer a more diverse peer group. IISc focuses majorly on post-graduate and doctoral research excellence.

Q: How much rank is required for IISc?

A: For the Bachelor of Science (Research) program, candidates require JEE Advanced rank within the top 2,000. For the B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing, a JEE Advanced rank within 500 to 700 is required for the General category students.

Q: Which is better, IISER or IISc?

A: IISc is considered as the more prestigious and older institution with a deeper focus on engineering and post-graduate research, whereas IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) are designed to promote undergraduate and integrated masters in basic sciences. IISc has better global rankings and significantly higher research funding compared to most individual IISER campuses across India.

Q: Can I join IISc without any entrance exam?

A: No, you cannot join IISc Bangalore without a valid national-level entrance exam score. Admissions are strictly merit-based. Even for international students or sponsored candidates, there are specific qualifying criteria and interviews. There is no provision for direct admission or management quota seats at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.

Q: Can I join IISc through GATE?

A: Yes, GATE is the required entrance exam for admission into the M.Tech and Ph.D. programs at IISc. Most engineering departments require a very high GATE score (often 850+) followed by a technical interview for certain specialized branches. Candidates with exceptional GATE scores are also eligible for monthly stipends and fellowships during their tenure at the institute.

Q: Does IISc provide a hostel facility?

A: Yes, IISc Bangalore provides hostel facilities for all its full-time students. The campus has multiple hostel blocks such as E-Block, U-Block, and the New Girls Hostel. The facilities include mess halls serving diverse Indian cuisines, high-speed internet, and common rooms. Living on campus is highly encouraged to participate in the 24/7 research culture of the institute.

Q: Can I join IISc after 12th?

A: Yes, you can join IISc after the 12th grade by applying for the Bachelor of Science (Research) or the B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing. To be eligible, you must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in your 10+2 and must secure a top rank in exams like JEE Advanced or the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).

Q: Does IISc Bangalore provide single rooms?

A: At IISc Bangalore, single rooms are allotted to Ph.D. scholars and final-year M.Tech students to provide them with the privacy and focus required for their research thesis. Undergraduate students usually share rooms in their first few years. The hostels are well-maintained, and the allotment is subject to availability and the specific hostel block policies updated each academic year.
