About Indian Institute of Science, [IIS] Bangalore

The brainchild of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a strong businessman and humanitarian, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceptualised in the late 1800s. To this end, Tata set up a provisional committee under the leadership of Burjorji Padshah, an educationist, to come up with an outline for the proposed university. NIRF ranked IIS No 1 among the top universities in India.

The Institute which started with just two departments – General and Applied Chemistry and Electrical Technology – today the college has over 40 departments expanded across six divisions: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Interdisciplinary Research, Mechanical Sciences, and Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

IISc Bangalore Admissions are based on the merit list of one of the national examinations for all the courses offered by the college. A few amenities located in different parts of the campus make day-to-day life smooth and comfortable. In fact, these facilities have made IISc a totally self–contained campus.

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Mechanical Engineering), batch of 2017
  • The class timings at Indian Institute of Science starts from 10:00 am.

Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] (Physics), batch of 2022

Classes start at 8:30, each class lasts 1 hour, there is a 30 mins break at 10:30, then a 1 hour lunch break at 1:00 pm, then lab hours from 2:00 to 5:00. Saturday and Sunday are holidays. We will be studying all the subjects in the first 3 semesters, then we choose our major. There are mid-sems and end-sems, besides some quizzes and tests. Being the top-rated research institute in the country, it provides us with highly distinguished professors who have pursued their PhDs and post-docs from top 20 institutes in the world. So quality of teaching is undoubtedly impeccable. Lectures are mostly delivered using PowerPoint slides and lecture notes are mailed to us by the teaching assistants. There is no ragging, absolute freedom to do variety of recreational stuff, ambient climate in Banagalore, well connected transportation system, highly academically enriching surrounding, and a lot more, combined together give a very holistic experience for a student doing his bachelor's.

There are tons of clubs in UG, and students clubs in general. The most powerful of which is the Student's Council. There are also department specific clubs. We UGs conduct an annual tech cum cultural fest, Pravega. It's fun, and we face the real drill since there are very less students to manage the entire things and hence participation by nearly every student becomes crucial. The institute organises the annual freshers and orientation ceremony, Sangam, wherein different cultural events take place. Life depends upon how you perceive. You get the freedom to choose. You can go all guns blazing, living out a life, returning late at night, of course managing the study pressure, or you could stay low profile, stuck in your room doing stuff. You get everything for whatever choice you make.
