IIT Madras Latest Updates
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is known both nationally and internationally for excellence in technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial consultancy was established in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The institution was established as the result of the first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany.
The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology – the first of these to be instituted were at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001). IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares.
The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. The Institute is proud to bear the laureate of being the No.1 engineering university in India. More recently, IIT Madras has been given the title of Institute of Eminence. IIT Madras has been the top-ranked engineering institute in India for four consecutive years as well as the ‘Best Educational Institution’ in Overall Category in the NIRF Rankings of 2019 put out by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized in a unique pattern. The departments namely,
IIT Madras is a residential institute that occupies a 617-acre campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. The campus is located 10 km from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway station, and is well connected by city buses. Kasturba Nagar is the nearest station on the Chennai MRTS line. The facilities provided by the college include student governance council, transportation, library, the centre of innovation, banks, post office, hospitals, schools and many others.
Library:
The Central Library provides information services and access to bibliographic as well as full-text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of the Institute community. Well-equipped with modern facilities, the five-storey air-conditioned and WiFi-enabled facility contains a myriad of resources including CD- ROMs, online databases, audio-video cassettes, books, e-journals, patents, e-standards, theses, reports, monographs, full-text and bibliographical databases among others. The library is divided into different sections - Textbook/Reference, General Stacks, Reading Halls, Journals and Current Periodicals, Media Research Centre (which regularly screens educational and scientific videos), a Book Bank, among many others.
Student Government Body:
The student government operates at three levels which are Institute level, Hostel level and Department level. The Student Governance at IIT Madras has a legislative body. It comprises the Student Legislative Council (SLC), the Executive Council and the Student Ethics and Constitution Council. It consists of nearly 60 student legislators elected from various hostels and departments.
The Centre of Innovation:
The Centre for Innovation (CFI) is one of India’s biggest 24/7 student labs, this unique lab was set up in 2008 with funds donated by the batch of 1981, and is located in the New Academic Complex at the heart of the campus. A comprehensive inventory, great workspace, ample guidance from faculty and students and the zeal and passion of the CFI family make it a gifted asset for the IIT Madras community.
Banks and Post Office:
The Institute has two banks situated in the campus, State Bank of India and Canara Bank. Both banks are regular branches in the campus and are housed in separate buildings. Application forms for important national level exams such as JEE, GATE and CAT are sold in these banks. The campus has a Post Office and a Telecom Centre, which come under separate postal zones.
Shopping Complex:
The campus has two shopping centres that cater to the needs of the students and residents. One is the Student Facility Centre (Gurunath) and the other is located in the residential area. The second complex offers everything from general supplies and groceries to a bakery and saloon.
Hospital:
The Institute hospital, located near the Central Workshop, includes facilities to address the general health problems of students. Apart from regular doctors, there is a set of visiting specialists that include a general surgeon, ENT surgeon, ophthalmologist, orthopedics, cardiologist and psychiatrist. There are well-equipped laboratories for all tests, X-Ray and in-patient wards, while an ambulance facility is also available. The Apollo hospital runs the pharmacy in the hospital.
Transportation:
The Institute provides bus transport facilities within the campus. Four regular buses and 10 battery-powered vehicles.
Canteen:
The campus has a couple of food joints, mostly visited by hostel members looking for something different.
Guest House:
The Institute has two guest houses within the campus. The one near the Gajendra Circle is the Bose-Einstein Guest House and the one in the hostel zone is called the Taramani Guest House (TGH). VIPs, Institute guests and invited guests are usually accommodated in the Bose-Einstein Guest House. The hostels also have guest rooms that can be booked for parents through the Office of Hostel Management.
Sports and Recreational Facilities:
Excellent facilities including an Olympic-standard swimming pool, a well-equipped gymnasium, the impressive IIT-Chemplast cricket ground, a vast stadium and a high-tech wood-floored multipurpose indoor stadium are available in the Students' Activities' Center.There are several Sporting Clubs namely,

IIT Madras offers up to three fellowship schemes for its deserving candidates pursuing the M.Tech program. The three schemes are DAE-GF Scheme, AERB-GF Scheme, ESSO-MoES Scheme. The description of the schemes is stated in the following.
DAE-GF Scheme
This scheme is offered by the Department of Atomic Energy in various engineering disciplines. The candidates who have qualified the GATE exams are selected under this scheme and a fellowship of Rs.35,000 per month is awarded. Once the candidate under this fellowship scheme completes their M.Tech program he/she will be placed in one of the DAE units.
AERB-GF Scheme
This scheme is under the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Graduate Fellowship, where three students will be selected either from Mechanical Engg. Or Chemical Engineering or from both will be offered a stipend every month.
ESSO-MoES Scheme
Under this scheme, a maximum of ten candidates will be selected belonging to the M.Tech in Ocean Technology discipline which may also include up to two candidates from the National Institute of Ocean Technology. These candidates will be sponsored by the Earth System Science Organization- Ministry of Earth sciences.

IIT Madras is a residential institute and provides accommodation to students in the hostels. There are 19 hostels, all named after the mighty rivers of India. Of the hostels, four are for girls and 15 are for boys. The first-year undergraduate students are accommodated in a double-occupancy style accommodation. In subsequent years, single/ double/ triple rooms are allotted depending on the hostel. Postgraduate students get single rooms. Internet and Local Area Network (LAN) facilities are provided in every room and there is a computer room in the hostels. Hostel facilities include a garden and a library from which students can borrow books.
Every hostel has washing machines, fully equipped sports facilities, music rooms, tech rooms and television rooms. Most hostel-level meetings take place in common rooms. The students celebrate festivals such as Holi, Pongal, Onam, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve. The hostel night is organized annually by each hostel, where the entire hostel celebrates with food and music. This occasion also commemorates the graduating seniors of that hostel. The Institute operates buses and mini autos connecting the main gate to different parts of the campus, including the Hostel and Academic zones at frequent intervals. Students are encouraged to traverse the vast campus on bicycles or on foot. Use of powered vehicles by students is not permitted.

I have done two internships one in Altisource and other as a role regarding software developer. The stipend is around INR 30,000 per month.Placements are excellent with the minimum salary package of INR 12 lakhs per annum and highest salary package is around INR 82 lakhs per annum. I don't know much about alumni network.
