What is HBCSE?

In the late 1960s, scientists at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) took the initiative to improve the quality of Science taught in India. That idea later became Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE) in 1974.

In terms of Olympiads, HBCSE partners with multiple other government organizations to select the brightest in Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Junior Science. Every year the best performers of the HBCSE Olympiads are sent to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad to represent India at that stage.

A few highlights about the HBCSE Olympiad are given below.

The HBCSE International Science Olympiad is conducted every year in January. The HBCSE ISO exam is completely based on Science. Students can get themselves for the HBSE NSE Olympiad exam by contacting the registered center coordinator to apply for the NSE, a preliminary HBCSE ISO exam.

HBCSE conducts exams at various stages to select the best students in the country and send them to represent India among the international competitions of Science. Five stages for selecting the students are given below.

Given below are the important dates of the HBCSE Science Olympiad Exam.

September 15, 2021- November 15, 2021

Stage 3: International Science Olympiad (ISO)

Announced Later

International Science Olympiad is a set of multiple exams grouped under a single name. The exams include International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), International Biology Olympiad (IBO), International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO), and International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Stage 1: Indian Olympiad Qualifier Examination (IOQ)

The first two stages of the HBCSE Science Olympiad are merged into a single stage called the Indian Olympiad Qualifier Examination (IOQ). For every subject, the exam consists of two parts, National Standard Examination (NSE) and the Indian National Olympiad (INO).

While all students will write both parts, the IOQ Part II (INO) answer booklets of only a limited number of students, who qualify through performance in IOQ Part I (NSE), will be evaluated. Detailed qualification criteria will be announced soon.

National Standard Examination (NSE) is an objective type of question to be completed in 75 minutes.

Indian National Olympiad (INO) is conducted for 120 minutes, where students are required to write detailed answers on an answer booklet.

Note: Students can write both the exams, but evaluation of the INO answer booklet will be eligible only for those who qualify through performance in IOQ Part I (NSE).

Stage 2: OCSC

An online Olympiad Orientation Camp (OOC) will be held for all students ranked between 1 to 100 (both included) in IOQ part 2. All students maintaining a minimum of 80% attendance in the online OOC will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Stage 3: International Science Olympiad

Students representing the country are sent to various organizing countries to attend the exam, and teachers will act as judges (in the particular exam) and observers.

HBCSE 2022 Mathematical Olympiad

The International Mathematics Olympiad was conducted by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) from 1986 onwards. IMO is currently running in collaboration with the HBCSE, Mumbai. The exam was started in 1959 in Romania. India has been participating in IMO since 1989 and has been winning an honorable mention most years.

Given below are important dates for the HBCSE IMO.

Application Begins

September 15, 2021 (Tentative)

Stage 1: International Olympiad Qualifier (IOQM) in Mathematics Exam Date (PRMO and RMO Combined)

6th March 2022

Stage 2: INMO for all Subjects

27th February 2022

Stage 3: International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp

Stage 4: International Mathematics Olympiad

July 2022 (Tentative)

IMO is conducted in six stages, with the first five being conducted in India (by HBCSE), and the last one is a member country (different each year).

There are a total of 4 stages for the HBCSE Mathematics Olympiad.

Stage 1: Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM)

The first stages of the HBCSE Maths Olympiad, PRMO, and RMO, are combined to a single qualifier Olympiad, the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM). The stage is organized by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India). The test is for a three-hour examination comprising 30 questions, with each question having an integer answer in the range 00-99.

Stage 2: Indian National Mathematics Olympiad

The second stage of IMO is Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), organized by the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR. It is a four-hour exam comprising of 6 questions with proof-based answers.

The top scorers in the INMO exam are invited to the International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp.

Stage 4: International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

A member country holds this stage. Students selected after the above rounds are sent along with a few teachers to accompany them for a two-day examination.

HBCSE 2022 Olympiad Eligibility Criteria

HBCSE has made a few criteria that every student must follow to sit for the HBCSE examination. All the students have to clear these eligibility criteria to appear for the examination. Eligibility criteria for HBCSE Mathematics Olympiad and HBCSE Science Olympiad are different from each other.

  • Students born on or after August 1, 2002, and studying in Class VIII, IX, X, XI, or XII, are eligible to write IOQM.
  • Students studying in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) are ELIGIBLE to write IOQM.
  • A student who is either an INMO 2022 Merit Awardee OR an INMO Awardee from 2022 or earlier is eligible to write INMO 2022 WITHOUT qualifying through IOQM provided they fulfill the eligibility criteria of IMO 2022 and EGMO 2023.
