JEE Main Counselling FAQs

Q. Can I fill the choice when I go to the Reporting Centre?

Ans. No, choice-filling must be compulsorily done online before the specified date. Once done there will be no choice for choice filling or re-ordering. All rounds of seat allotment will be carried out based on these choices. After the process of choice-filling, document verification and seat acceptance will be done.

Q. At the Reporting Center, what are the processes that should be completed before completing seat acceptance?

Ans. A candidate who has the offer of a seat must report in person at the Reporting Centre for getting his/her documents (mentioned above) verified to accept the seat offered.

Q. What if I am not interested in the seat offered, can I attend the further rounds of seat allotment without accepting the seat?

Ans. Firstly, do not fill in choices for courses you don't want to pursue. In case you do not accept the seat offered to you, you will not be allowed to participate in any of the further rounds of seat allotment.

Q. For preparatory courses, is there a separate allotment process?

Ans. No, there will not be any separate allotment process for preparatory courses and will be allotted along with all other courses only. Qualifying candidates seeking admission in IITs/NITs/IIITs/Other-GFTIs must lock their choices during the choice filling process. Admission to IITs will be purely determined based on JEE Advanced Score.

Q. Can I accept the same seat offered to me in the first round of seat allotment later after the first allotment?

Ans. No, if you fail to make it to the reporting centre in person within the seat acceptance period of the round, you will lose the seat and will be out of the seat allotment process.

Q. Can I claim a refund for the seat acceptance fee if I do not wish to take the seat?

Ans. Yes, you can claim the refund online. Visit the official website of JoSAA and file a refund. The request will be processed within a few days.

Q. When should I register for JEE Main 2020 Counselling and where?

Ans. Once the results have been declared and the counseling process starts, all qualified candidates will be required to register for counseling on the official website.

Q. What is the process of JEE Main Seat Allotment?

Ans. The candidates will be offered seats based on merit, choice filling, and availability of seats. Mock allotment of seats will be done before the final allotment.

Q. What is the mock allotment of seats?

Ans. Mock allotment of seats will be conducted to get the candidates familiar with the seat allotment process so that they can fill the right choices in the final seat allotment process. There will be two rounds of mock allotment of seats.

Q. What is the procedure for Fee Payment & Seat Acceptance?

Ans. Once the allotment of seats is over, candidates will have to choose to - Freeze, Float, Slide and withdraw the choice and then proceed for the payment of fees.

Q. What is the Freeze option?

Ans. If the candidate is fine with the seat allotted and wishes to lock the choice and not participate in any further rounds, he/she can choose the freeze option.

Q. What is the Float option?

Ans. If the candidate accepts the seat allotted but also wishes to upgrade if possible, he/she can select the float option.

Q. What is the Slide option?

Ans. If the candidate accepts the seat allotted but wishes to upgrade the course in the same institute, he/she can select the slide option.

Q. What is the withdraw option in the seat acceptance process?

Ans. If the candidate has accepted the seat allotted, he/she can choose the withdraw option and report it to the institute before the last round of seat allotment.

Q. Is the JEE Main 2020 counselling fee the same for all categories?

Ans. No, the fees will vary category wise. For General candidates, it is INR 45000. Whereas, for SC/ ST/ SC-PwD/ ST-PwD/ GEN-PwD/ OBC-NCL-PwD it is INR 20,000.

Q. What is the process of verification of Documents?

Ans. The participating candidates will be required to verify the list of documents written below:

  • 3 passport size photographs (same as the ones uploaded at the time of registration)
  • JoSAA seat allotment letter (Provisional)
  • Photo ID
  • Receipt/Proof of seat acceptance fee payment
  • JEE Main Admit Card
  • DOB proof
  • JEE Main Score Card
  • Xth & XIIth standard Marks sheet
  • The category certificate (if applicable)

Q. What does dual reporting mean?

Ans. Suppose, a candidate has accepted a seat in an NIT in a previous round but his/her seat gets upgraded to an IIT in the next round, then he/she will be required to report to the Reporting centre (of IIT) and accept the seat irrespective of the fact if he/she has reported at the NIT already, or else the candidate will lose both the seats. Since the process involves reporting at two Reporting centres, it is termed as dual reporting.

Q. If I am a resident of Karnataka but I have passed my Class 12th examination from Uttar Pradesh, what will be my state code of eligibility?

Ans. The state code of eligibility will be the state where the candidate has studied his/her class 12th and not the native state. So your state code of eligibility is Uttar Pradesh.

Q. What happens if I have not “locked” my choices?

Ans. In such a case, the last saved choices/preferences will be locked/frozen automatically once the time-window for filling in choices is over.

Q. Should I pay the acceptance Fee again if my seat gets upgraded to an IIT in the next round?

Ans. No, once you have paid the acceptance fee, you need not pay anything again.

Q. What is the CSAB Special Round of counselling?

Ans. CSAB i.e. Central Seat Allocation Board abbreviated as CSAB will conduct a special round of counselling only for NITs, IIITs & GFTIs once the JoSAA rounds are over.

Q. Can I get a refund for the seat acceptance if I withdraw my seat?

Ans. Yes, you will get the amount refunded after a deduction of INR 1000 which will be charged as the processing fee.
