The Karnataka Common Entrance Test, or KCET, is a state-level entrance exam conducted every year by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which functions as an autonomous body under the Government of Karnataka. It acts as a gateway for students looking to get into various undergraduate professional courses offered by colleges across the state. These courses include B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering), B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), B.Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy), D.Pharm. (Diploma in Pharmacy), and also programs in Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, Forestry, Sericulture, and other allied fields.

The KCET exam is held in offline mode (pen-and-paper format) and usually takes place over multiple days. Separate sessions are conducted for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. The questions are based on the syllabus of the 1st and 2nd year PUC (Pre-University Course) as prescribed by the Karnataka State Department of Pre-University Education. Candidates can take the exam in either English or Kannada.

For aspirants aiming for top colleges, understanding the year-wise KCET cutoff trends is super important. Knowing the previous years’ cutoffs can really help in making smarter and more informed choices during the college selection process. This breakdown of cutoff patterns across different categories and top engineering colleges gives a clear picture of how competitive the admissions really are.

KCET Testing Criteria and Qualifying Marks

The KCET exam tests how well candidates have understood the core concepts from their 10+2 syllabus, based on the stream they choose.

  • Engineering aspirants are tested in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
  • Pharmacy and AYUSH aspirants are evaluated on Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.

Each subject paper includes 60 MCQs, with 1 mark per question. There is no negative marking. You get 80 minutes for each paper. To be eligible for ranking, candidates must meet the KCET qualifying marks (12th or equivalent):

  • General Category: Minimum 45% aggregate in PCM or PCB.
  • SC/ST/OBC: Minimum 40% aggregate in the required subjects.

Candidates  who are aiming for admission to Architecture programs must have qualified in either NATA or JEE Main Paper 2. Candidates who are aiming for AYUSH or Veterinary courses are required to have cleared the NEET-UG examination, as it's a mandatory criterion for these programs

KCET 2023 Cutoff Highlights

The KCET 2023 exam for Engineering, Agriculture, and Pharmacy streams was held from May 20 to 22, 2023, by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). The exam requires candidates to study core subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, depending on the exam they will be taking. The provisional answer key was released on May 26, and results were officially declared on June 15 via the KEA portal, where students could check their scores and ranks. The counselling process began in July 2023. KEA conducted multiple rounds so that all categories and rank holders had an equal chance at securing a seat.

Factors Affecting KCET 2023 Cutoff

Factors that were involved in deciding the KCET Cut off 2023 can be listed as follows:

  • Number of Applicants: A higher number of candidates appearing for the exam increased competition, often leading to higher cutoff ranks.
  • Difficulty Level of the Exam: The overall toughness of the question papers in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology significantly impacted the cutoff trends. Easier papers generally resulted in higher cutoffs.
  • Availability of Seats: The total number of seats available in each college and course directly influenced the cutoff. Courses with limited seats saw tighter cutoffs.
  • Previous Year Cutoff Trends: The cutoff ranks from KCET 2022 and earlier years served as benchmarks for institutions while setting expectations for 2023.
  • Candidate Category: Cutoffs varied significantly based on reservation categories such as General, SC, ST, OBC, and other state-specific classifications.

Category-wise KCET Cutoff 2023

The KCET Results for the cutoff are released on the official KEA portal. The document provides comprehensive data that assists students in understanding the competitive landscape and planning their counselling preferences effectively.

The GMH category refers to General Merit candidates who claim only regional benefits due to their Hyderabad-Karnataka residency. GMRH candidates belong to the General Merit category, have studied in rural areas, and are from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, thus eligible for both rural and regional reservations. The SCKH category applies to Scheduled Caste candidates from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, who receive both SC and regional reservation benefits upon providing valid documents.
