What is the Times Scholars Programme?

The Times Scholars Programme is an initiative of the Times of India to encourage school students of Class 10-12 to develop a reading habit that helps them get a better understanding of our society, environment and an overall informed worldview. The aim is to enable the students to become good citizens of the country and have a bright future. The program is available for the students in two levels i.e. Level 1 (for Class 10 and 11 students) and Level 2 (for Class 12 students). Top 100 students at each level get a Dell laptop each and other benefits.

Times Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

  • The applicant should be an Indian national studying in Class 10-12.

Times Scholarship Rewards and Benefits:

Level 1 (Class 10 and 11 students):

  • Top 100 students to be awarded with a Dell laptop each.

Level 2 (Class 12 students):

  • Top 100 students to be awarded with a Dell laptop each.
  • The students are also eligible for admission in the UG level courses at Bennett University with a scholarship for 1 year provided they fulfill the eligibility criteria of the university.

Times Scholars Programme Application Process:

The application to the Times Scholars Programme is free i.e. the applicants do not have to pay any registration fee to apply for this program. The details of the application process is given below:


  • Interested applicants should visit the registration page of the Times Scholars Programme.
  • The candidate should fill in all the required details and click on ‘Register’.

Reading Phase:

  • Starting October 25, The Times of India newspaper will carry an article each day under the label ‘TIMES SCHOLAR’ on topics such as current affairs, science & technology, sports, politics, social issues, education, global development, etc for a duration of 50 days. 
  • These articles provide a multi-dimensional perspective to students to get a deeper understanding of various topics.

Practice Tests and Presentation:

  1. Weekly tests are conducted online based on the articles.
  2. The candidates are asked to summarize the articles and their understanding of the topic in the form of a PowerPoint presentation to be uploaded on the site twice during the entire program.
  3. The practice test will have 3 stories with 6 questions each and should be answered within 15 minutes.

Final Examination:

  • Around December 21-25, 2019 an online Time Scholarship test is conducted followed by an interview to assess the candidates’ understanding and perspective. 
  • The test will have 11 stories with 6 questions each and has to be answered in 60 minutes.

First Shortlist and Interview:

  • The first set of candidates are shortlisted based on the cumulative score in the examination i.e. participation marks in the practice tests and presentation + final examination marks.
  • All the best performers will have to appear for an interview in person.

Winners and Felicitation:

  1. For each of the levels, 100 candidates are chosen as winners.
  2. A selected number of winners will be invited to a felicitation ceremony, the details of which will be communicated at a later stage.

Times Scholarship Selection Criteria:

  • The candidates are selected based on the marks scored by the students in the reading phase, final examination, and interview process.
