What is the Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening Scholarship is a global scholarship program initiated by the UK Government which provides outstanding students an opportunity to pursue a one year Masters degree in the UK. Chevening awards both scholarships and fellowships to candidates chosen by the British Embassies and High Commissions from all over the world. The selected candidates get to live and study in the UK for a year, experience UK culture, develop professional and academic networking and build long-lasting positive relationships with the UK. Almost 1500 scholarships are offered globally for the academic year 2020/ 21 which shows the UK is committed to developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Chevening Scholarship Key Dates:

The application timeline for the Chevening scholarship varies from year to year. The Chevening scholarship usually opens in the month of August and the entire selection process takes at least 8 months. The key dates for the Chevening scholarship application are mentioned below:

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

The students applying for the scholarship should belong to the Chevening-eligible country or territory. The other eligibility criteria are listed below:

  • The applicant should have an undergraduate degree or an upper second-class 2:1 honors degree at the time of application to be able to apply for the postgraduate program.
  • The applicant should have work experience of at least 2 years.
  • The applicant should return to his/ her country for at least 2 years after the award has ended.
  • The candidate should have applies to 3 different eligible UK university courses and should have received an unconditional offer from at least 1 of these universities by July 16, 2021.
  • The applicant should meet the Chevening English language requirement by July 16, 2021.
  • The students should meet the University criteria for the English language.
  • He/ she should have an overall IELTS score of 6.5/ overall PTE score of 58/ overall TOEFL iBT score of 79/ overall C1 Advanced score of 176 or the minimum pass score in Trinity ISE II (B2).
  • Candidates who hold a British/ Dual British citizenship are not eligible to apply.
  • The applicants who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  • The applicant cannot be an employee, former employee, relative of an employee of the Queen’s Government.
  • The staff member of the association of Commonwealth Universities are not eligible to apply.
  • Employee, former employee, or relative of the employee working in Chevening Partner Organizations are eligible to apply.
  • The candidates who have previously studied in the UK with funding from UK Government-funded scholarship are not eligible to apply.

Chevening Scholarship Benefits:

All the candidates shortlisted for the Chevening scholarship are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (CFO) and its partner organizations.  The benefits availed by the Chevening scholars are listed below:

  1. Candidates who have qualified for an MBA program get a scholarship amount of GBP 18,000. If the tuition fee exceeds this amount, the candidates should do the remaining funding by themselves.
  2. Economy class airfare to travel to and from the country of residence through an approved route.
  3. Arrival allowance and departure allowance.
  4. Visa application cost for the candidate.
  5. Up to GBP 75 for TB testing, when required.
  6. Travel top-up allowance.
  7. A monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. The stipend amount differs if the candidate is studying in London or outside London.

How to apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening scholarship is applied online and does not have any application fees. The Chevening scholarship application form is accessed and submitted online. The detailed application process is explained below:

  • Interested applicants should visit the Chevening official website to access the Chevening online application system.
  • The candidate should click on the ‘Apply’ button which redirects to the application page.
  • The student should select the Country/ territory and level from the dropdown and should click on ‘Search’.
  • The applicants should now register as new users on the Chevening website.
  • The candidate should log in to the website using the newly created Username and password and start answering the set of online screening questionnaires in the Chevening Scholarship application form.
  • Next, the applicants should fill in all the required details and should also choose the courses and UK universities that they wish to attend.
  • UK universities and courses should be chosen carefully, as there is no option to change it at a later stage.
  • Finally, the applicant should recheck all the details entered and click on the ‘Submit’ button to complete the application process.

Candidates who have registered for the Chevening scholarship receive email updates about the application status at each step of the selection process. The candidate can also check the scholarship status on the online application system by logging in with the registered credentials.

Chevening Scholarship Important Information:

  • The documents to be uploaded along with the online application form should be in PDF format and should not be more than 5 MB in size. The file should be named in less than 50 characters.
  • All the application forms need to be submitted in the English language only. No other language is accepted.
  • The online application form does not have an auto-saving function and each session expires in 60 minutes. The applicants are advised to save their work regularly so as to not lose their work.
  • Each applicant is required to choose 2 referees who will decide the applicants’ suitability for the Chevening scholarship. The selected referee should not be a close friend/ relative.
  • The work experience the candidate should have can be full-time/ part-time/ voluntary/ paid or unpaid internships. The work experience as a part of the UG/ PG level course is not eligible.
  • The selected candidates should attend the interview in the city in which the British Embassy or High Commission is situated. Skype interviews are only allowed in exceptional cases.
  •  Prior to attending the interview, the applicant should upload all academic documents and biography on the application system. 
  • The referees should also submit the reference within the stipulated time.
