German Chancellor Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
Only the graduates from selected countries are eligible to apply for the German chancellor fellowship programme. The fellows will work on a project developed by themselves under the mentorship of a German host. The eligibility criteria include:
- The candidates should find a host in Germany, and it can be an institution, trust or university.
- They should receive a confirmation from the host in Germany.
- The citizens of one of the following countries are eligible to apply for the German chancellor fellowship:
- India
- USA
- Russia
- China
- Brazil
- The candidates should have obtained the bachelor's degree or equivalent within the last twelve years.
- The candidates should have leadership experience.
- They should be able to speak in German or English language.
- Candidates who have stayed more than six months in Germany before the application deadline are not eligible to apply for the German chancellor fellowship programme.

The candidates must find a host in Germany before applying for the Humboldt foundation German chancellor fellowship programme. To find an appropriate host, they can refer to the following points:
- The candidates of Russia, China and the USA can contact the Alumni Association of German Chancellor fellowship in their country.
- However, there are no German alumni associations in India and Brazil.
- Instead, the candidates can approach a German organisation in their country to establish contacts in Germany.
German Chancellor Fellowship Benefits
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation selects ten students from the eligible countries for the German chancellor fellowship every year. It is a twelve-month programme, including four-week introductory seminar sessions conducted in October. However, the fellowship might extend for up to three months if required. The benefits of the German chancellor fellowship are as follows:
- The selected candidates will receive either EUR 2,150, EUR 2,450 or EUR 2,750, depending on their level of study and achievements.
- The grant amount includes mobility allowance and health insurance for the candidates.
- The German chancellor fellowship grants EUR 500 as a cost allowance every month.
- The German chancellor fellowship also grants the candidate's travel allowance.
- The fellowship additionally grants EUR 326 for the spouse and EUR 324 for a child to stay in Germany for upto three months.
- The fellowship will conduct a German language course in August and September for the benefit of the students. The students should mandatorily attend the training.
- The candidates will receive an allowance to stay at any institute in Europe for upto two months to help them complete their research.
- The selected candidates will receive total alumni support throughout the project.

German Chancellor Fellowship Selection Process
The foundation selects the candidates based on their professional and academic achievements. The selection panel's decisions are final and binding. However, the rejected candidates can request individual feedback and re-apply for the German chancellor fellowship. The selection process of the Alexander von Humboldt German chancellor fellowship involves three phases. They are:
Phase I - The selection committee will choose 15 candidates from each eligible country. The panel selects the candidates from the first phase based on applications that are formally approved. The German chancellor fellowship will provide written documents and an invitation for a selection meeting at Bonn.
Phase II - The candidates should attend a 20-minute personal interview conducted either in German or English. The candidates should present their projects to an independent selection panel during the interview. The panel will decide the allocation of the German counsellor fellowship.
Phase III - The selected candidates should participate in a group discussion on a general topic.
