IIT JAM Exam pattern
IIT JAM 2020 examination will be conducted in 3 sections and the pattern on which these 3 sections will be conducted is described in this section. Candidates are advised to go thoroughly.
IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2020
The IIT JAM 2020 examination for all six test papers will be carried out as an online computer-based test (CBT) where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen.

For all six test papers, duration of the examination will be of 3 hours. Medium for all test papers will be English only. There will be a total of 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. Entire paper will be divided into three sections, A, B, and C. All sections are compulsory.
IIT JAM 2020 Section-Wise Pattern
There are three sections in the IIT JAM 2020 which are Section A, Section B, and Section C. Details of these sections are given below:
It consists of a total of 30 multiple choice questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.
Question Papers will be in English only. For each wrong answer of 1 mark questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted and similarly, for each wrong answer of 2 marks questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted.
It contains a total of 10 multiple select questions carrying two marks each. Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.
Question papers at all exam Centres will be in English only. A candidate gets full credit if he/she selects all correct answers only and no wrong answers. There is no negative marking in this section.
It contains a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. For these NAT type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using a virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.
No choices will be shown for these types of questions. Question Papers at all exam centres will be in English only. There is no negative marking in this section.
- Candidate needs to carry the Admit card of IIT JAM 2020 and valid ID proof to the exam centre.
- Candidate must not carry any digital calculator, mobile phones any other electronic devices to the examination hall.
- There will be no partial marking in section B.
- If a candidate is involved in any malicious practices in IIT JAM 2020, it will lead to cancellation and disqualification of a candidate. Candidate will not be allowed to appear in future JAM.
