Marking Scheme
1 mark for correct answer and 1/3rd marks deducted for incorrect answer in one mark questions. 2 marks for correct answer and 2/3rd marks deducted for incorrect answer in two mark questions.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2019

  • Mode: IIT JAM 2019 will be conducted through Online i.e. Computer-based Test (CBT) for all the seven test papers. The questions will be shown in random order while candidates are taking examination. 

  • Question Type: The question paper will be of Objective Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

  • Sections: Question paper consists of 3 sections (Sections A, Section B, Section C)

  • Duration: Time given to complete the examination will be 3 hours i.e. 180 minutes.

  • No. of Questions: Section A - 30, Section B - 10, and Section 3 - 20

  • Marking Scheme: +1 mark for one marks answers, +2 marks for two mark answers

  • Negative Marking: 1/3 will be deducted for one mark answers, 2/3 will be deducted for two mark answers

  • Evaluation Scheme: In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero marks. In Section – A (MCQ), the wrong answer will result in negative marks.

  • Medium: Question paper will be in English medium.


IIT JAM 2019 Exam Pattern

There are three sections in the IIT JAM 2019 which are Section A, Section B, and Section C. Details of these sections are given below:

Section A

  • Question-Type: It consists a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each.

  • Options: Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.

  • Negative Marking: Negative marking will be done as mentioned above.

Section B

  • Question Type: It contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions carrying two marks each.

  • Note: Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.

  • Scheme: Candidate gets full credit if he/she selects all correct answers only and no wrong answers.

  • Negative Marking: There is no negative marking in this section.

Section C

  • Question Type: It contains a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each.

  • Directions: For these NAT type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.

  • No Options: No choices will be shown for these types of questions.

Note:

  • Candidate needs to carry Admit card of IIT JAM 2019 and valid ID proof to exam centre.

  • Candidate must not carry any digital calculator, mobile phones any other electronic devices to the examination hall.

  • There will be no partial marking in section B.

  • If the candidate is involved in any malicious practices in IIT JAM 2019, It will lead to Cancellation and Disqualification of the candidate. Candidate will not be allowed to appear in future JAM.

If I have taken IIT JAM how many papers will be there?Among them how many should I opt?

Candidates will have totally 7 papers.

The candidates can apply for either 1 or 2 papers out of the 7 JAM papers.

Candidates are however subject to the restrictions imposed by the test schedule which is hosted on the official website.

This happens because of some failure in internet transactions.You can get this problem sorted by following steps:

  • As soon as possible, you MUST initiate a fresh payment process on the JAPS website, and make the payment again.
  • The money that was debited from your account in the first attempt, will be credited to your bank account.
  • You will be charged only once. Any excess/unaccounted debits will be returned to you.

A scribble pad will be provided to the candidate that can be used to do the rough work.

The candidate has to return the scribble pad after the examination.

The candidates appearing for IIT JAM exam, must follow the exam pattern:

In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero marks. In Section – An (MCQ), the wrong answer will result in negative marks. For each wrong answer of 1 mark questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted and similarly for each wrong answer of 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted. In Section – B (MSQ), there are no negative and no partial marking provisions. There is no negative marking in Section – C (NAT)
