IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2019

  • Mode: IIT JAM 2019 will be conducted through Online i.e. Computer-based Test (CBT)

  • Question Type: The question paper will be of Objective Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

  • Sections: The question paper consists of 3 sections (Sections A, Section B, Section C)

  • Duration: The time given to complete the examination will be 3 hours i.e. 180 minutes.

  • No. of Questions: Section A - 30, Section B - 10, and Section 3 - 20

  • Marking Scheme: +1 mark for one marks answers, +2 marks for two mark answers

  • Negative Marking: 1/3 will be deducted for one mark answers, 2/3 will be deducted for two mark answers

  • Medium: The question paper will be in English medium.


IIT JAM 2019 Exam Pattern

Section A

  • Question-Type: It consists a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each.

  • Options: Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.

  • Tapping: Candidates can mark the answer by clicking the choice.

Section B

  • Question Type: It contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions carrying two marks each.

  • Note: Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.

  • Scheme: The candidate gets full credit if he/she selects all the correct answers only and no wrong answers.

  • Tapping: Candidates can mark the answers by clicking the choices.

Section C

  • Question Type: It contains a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each.

  • Note: For these NAT type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.

  • No Options: No choices will be shown for these types of questions.

  • Tapping: Candidates have to enter the answer by using a virtual numeric keypad.

  • Evaluation Scheme: In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero marks. In Section – An (MCQ), the wrong answer will result in negative marks.

Note:

  • For each correct answer, 1 mark is awarded and 1/3 marks deducted for every incorrect answer this applies to 1 mark questions

  • For each correct answer, 2 marks are awarded and 2/3rd marks are deducted for every incorrect answer and this applies to 2 marks questions.

  • Candidate needs to carry Admit card of IIT JAM 2019 and valid ID proof to the exam centre.

  • Candidate must not carry any digital calculator, mobile phones any other electronic devices to the examination hall.

Candidates will have totally 7 papers.

The candidates can apply for either 1 or 2 papers out of the 7 JAM papers.

Candidates are however subject to the restrictions imposed by the test schedule which is hosted on the official website.

This happens because of some failure in internet transactions.You can get this problem sorted by following steps:

  • As soon as possible, you MUST initiate a fresh payment process on the JAPS website, and make the payment again.
  • The money that was debited from your account in the first attempt, will be credited to your bank account.
  • You will be charged only once. Any excess/unaccounted debits will be returned to you.

The candidates appearing for IIT JAM exam, must follow the exam pattern:

In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero marks. In Section – An (MCQ), the wrong answer will result in negative marks. For each wrong answer of 1 mark questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted and similarly for each wrong answer of 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted. In Section – B (MSQ), there are no negative and no partial marking provisions. There is no negative marking in Section – C (NAT)

The JAM 2017 examination for all the seven test papers will be conducted online.

The candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen.

The duration of the examination will be 3 hours.

The medium for all the test papers will be English only.

There will be a total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks.

The entire paper will be divided into three parts [A, B and C].
