GATE website has been launched by the authorities. This year, the GATE Exam will be conducted by IIT Guwahati. The GATE 2026 registrations commenced from Aug 28, 2025 as the authorities have postponed the application dates. The last date to apply for the GATE 2026 exam will be September 28, 2025.

The information brochure has been released on the official website. The exam will be conducted from Feb 07- 15, 2026. The Two Paper Combination list has also been released by the authorities on Aug 21, 2025. You can check the two paper combination list from the official website. 

The Application form will be released soon by the authorities. You need to create a candidate's portal for registering for the exam.  The Result is expected to be released on March 19, 2026. You can download the result in the form of a scorecard.  The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted to give admissions to MTech/ME/ and PhD programs into IITs, NITs other major institutions.

What is GATE Exam?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, is a national-level entrance examination for admission to Master's in Technology (MTech) and direct PhD programs at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other institutes/universities across India.

The exam is jointly administered on a rotational basis by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, and Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB - GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India.

GATE Information Brochure

GATE information brochure 2026 has been released on the official website at gate2026.iitg.ac.in. You must go through the information brochure thoroughly before applying for the exam.

GATE Previous Year Key Changes

The conducting body has made a few changes to GATE examination. Based on the information brochure, the following are the changes made to GATE exam.

  • GATE exam fee was increased from INR 1700 to INR 1800. 
  • One additional subject, named Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, was added to the GATE syllabus. GATE 2026 exam contains a total of 30 subjects.
  • No exam centres will be held outside India.

GATE Eligibility Criteria 

Candidates should understand the importance of going through the pre-defined GATE eligibility criteria before attempting to fill out the application. The education requirement for GATE exam eligibility qualification 2026 is (10+2+3). Candidates studying in the final year of the UG program can also apply for the GATE 2026 exam.

GATE Syllabus 

IIT Guwahati will release the GATE 2026 syllabus. The exam syllabus varies depending on the paper chosen by the students; however, the syllabus of the General Aptitude (GA) part will be the same for all 30 papers.

GATE Exam Pattern

The GATE Exam Pattern 2026 is released on the GATE 2026 official website. It describes the basic framework of the question bank. Multiple-choice (MCQ), multiple-selection (MSQ), and numerical answer type (NAT) questions make up the GATE question paper. There is a negative marking for multiple-choice questions; however, there is no negative marking for questions containing numerical answers.

GATE Application Form

GATE application form 2026 will be released on the official website on Aug 28, 2025 at gate2026.iitg.ac.in. The last date to submit the application form without a late fee will be Sep 28, 2025. 

GATE exam form fees 2026 for the general category candidates is INR 1800. Whereas, female and SC/ST and PwD category candidates must pay INR 900. The late application fee for general and SC/ST/PwD category candidates is INR 2300 and INR 1400, respectively.

GATE Exam Centres

GATE exam centres 2026 will be released soon by the authorities. The Exam centre is selected by you while filling out the application form. You will be provided with 3 choices to fill in for the preferred exam centre. The final GATE exam center 2025 allotted to you will be mentioned on the admit card. 

The GATE exam centres 2026 must be chosen by candidates based on their preferences. IIT Guwahati assigns GATE test locations on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • In all GATE 2026 exam centres, the number of scribes will be more than that required for PWD candidates.

GATE scorecard 2026 will be valid for three years from the release date. This means that the GATE score can be used for admission and job recruitment for three years from 2026 to 2028.

GATE COAP Counselling

GATE exam purpose serves the candidates to get admission for postgraduate and doctoral level programs as well as apply for PSU jobs. The programs offered through GATE exam 2026 are listed below.

Importance of GATE Exam

The GATE 2026 score of any given year is valid for three years only. GATE score 2026 is also mandatory to be eligible for the various recruitment processes in many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

A valid GATE exam 2026 is an essential requirement for admission or financial assistance for the following programs supported by MoE or other government agencies.

GATE Admission Process

The GATE 2026 admission process includes all the events from the beginning of the application to the counselling process.

  • Filling out the GATE 2026 Application Form: The application form must be filled out first. Candidates must register on the GATE 2026 official website to take the exam.
  • GATE 2026 Admit Card Download: Candidates must download their GATE admit card after registering.
  • Attend the GATE 2026 Exam: Candidates must attend the exam on the designated date, according to their chosen subject.
  • GATE Result 2026: The exam's organising body will make the GATE exam 2026 announcement. The candidates' marks, normalised scores, and ranks will be included in the GATE 2026 result.
  • Please participate in the GATE 2026 Counseling Process: GATE-qualified applicants will participate in counselling to select the college and branch based on their rank and preferences.

IIT Roorkee conducted the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025 on Feb 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2026. Candidates can visit the official website @gate2025.iitr.ac.in to check the branch-wise exam schedule for GATE 2026.
