About IIT Ropar

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, also known as IIT Ropar, is an Institute of National Importance established in 2008. Originally mentored by IIT Delhi, the institute now functions from its permanent 501-acre campus located in Rupnagar, Punjab, on the banks of the Satluj River. Recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, IIIT Ropar is ranked 176th in the QS Asian University Rankings,  Southern Asia 2026. It is also placed at 32nd position in the NIRF 2025 Engineering rankings. It is one of the eight second-generation IITs established to expand high-quality technical education in India.

IIT Ropar offers various UG, PG, and PhD programs across 12 departments and several interdisciplinary centres in Engineering, Science, and Humanities. IIT Ropar admission 2026 is ongoing. IIT Ropar Admission for B.Tech programs is made based on performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) for Indian Nationals. Admissions to the M.Tech Programmes are made based on performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Admission criteria for various IIT Ropar courses are given below:

• B.Tech: Candidates must have completed 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects and 75% marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD). Selection is based on the JEE Advanced exam (qualified via JEE Main) and JoSAA counselling.

• M.Tech: Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in a relevant stream with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD). For selection, candidates must have a valid GATE score and participate in COAP counselling. IIT graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or above are eligible for direct admission without a GATE score.

• PhD: Aspirants must have a master's degree in a relevant field with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD). Additionally, GATE/ UGC-NET/ CSIR-NET is typically required, followed by a written test and/or interview. Direct PhD is available for B.Tech graduates from CFTIs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above.

• Merit Cum Means (MCM) Scholarship: This is the primary internal support system, awarded to up to 25% of undergraduate students. Eligible students receive a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly pocket allowance of INR 1,000 for ten months per year. To qualify, students must maintain a minimum CGPA (usually 6.0 or higher) and have a family gross income not exceeding INR 4.5 lakhs per annum (though this limit is sometimes adjusted in line with government revisions).
• INSPIRE Scholarship: Sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), this is specifically for students enrolled in Basic Science programs (such as B.Tech. in Engineering Physics or similar tracks). It offers INR 80,000 annually (INR 60,000 as a scholarship and INR 20,000 for summer research projects). Eligibility is restricted to those in the top 1% of their board exams or within the top 10,000 rank in JEE Advanced, provided they maintain a CGPA of at least 6.0.
• Institute Free Studentship: For students who may not meet the strict merit criteria for MCM but demonstrate significant financial need, the institute offers a "Free Studentship." This covers the tuition fee for the remaining 10% of the students (beyond the 25% covered by MCM).
