VARCHAS is the sports festival of IIT Jodhpur. It celebrates the spirit of sportsmanship, and serves as a platform to showcase countless hours of perspiration put in by university level teams to achieve excellence in sports. Varchas was conducted first in 2011, with a vision of promoting sports among the university level colleges of India, and providing the athletes a platform to showcase their talent. Competitions are held in football, cricket, table tennis, lawn tennis, badminton, squash, volleyball, basketball and athletics, in the national level stada of Jodhpur. Varchas promotes healthy competition and invites the teams to prove their mettle in their respective sport.
Moreover, students of IIT Jodhpur present their social commitment through Soch - The Social Aspect of Varchas. Soch is a platform, where pertinent social issues are picked up and solutions are arrived at through discussions and debates, spreading awareness and conducting drives in the masses. It is a small step towards the amelioration of the society…

2. IGNUS
IGNUS is IIT Jodhpur’s Annual Techno–Social cum Cultural Festival. Over the past five years, the event has seen increased participation of colleges from all across the country. It hosts an array of cultural events, activities and competitions, which keep the fest full of life and zest. The cultural events mainly consist of pronites, performances and competitions. The techno part of the event, which promises to ignite the gray matter, has its motto of promoting innovation, technology and scientific thinking.
Adding a dimension of social Responsibility, IGNUS has initiated a social campaign - PRAKRITI towards sustainable development of the society by conducting various campaigns, competitions and exhibitions in various schools and colleges. Also, adding to the fun are the buzzing informals, like city-wide treasure hunt - Breakthrough, which is one of the only event of its kind to take place in Jodhpur. Also, the Alumni of IIT Jodhpur are invited to their Alma Mater on this occasion.

Intra-Institute Fests
IIT Jodhpur Student Gymkhana hosts intra-institute festivals for its own student community. They are Spandan, Nimble, Kalakriti and Kridansh.

1. SPANDAN
Spandan is the intra-institute cultural fest of IIT Jodhpur, usually the first fest of the session. It draws an enthusiastic crowd, eager to portray their talents in the cultural arena. Versatility in the various categories is extensive, with competitions organized in fields, like drama, dance, singing, literature, photography events, informals and fashion show. Three days of Spandan awakens the whole campus leaving the students to prepare all night. Spandan is one of the first public occasions to take place in the year, and hence it brings together students from all years to interact with each other. Participation with zeal and showcasing the hidden creativity tamed inside an individual, are the motives of the fest.

2. NIMBLE
Nimble, the intra-college technical fest provides a platform to the techno buds of the Institute to show their hidden talent. Nimble comprises of four action packed days, filled with a great variety of tech and science events ranging from intense mind boggling events (such as robotics, electronics and programming) to fun filled events (like angry bird, quizzes, and crypto)). Apart from the events, talks are organized by eminent personalities in the field of Science and Technology, to motivate students to work harder, as there is no end to discoveries and inventions.

3. KALAKRITI
Kalakriti is a mixed bag of fun-filled competitions, interesting workshops and back-to-back movie screenings. Because everything you can imagine is real! : this line wakes up the dormant talent amongst students and the output is sudden burst of colors. With a multitude of events ranging from Fine Arts and Clay Modelling, to Photography and Video Editing, ‘Kalakriti’ witnesses huge participation from designers and non-designers alike. Events like ‘Scribble Day’ brings together the entire final year batch of students, whom all the other students bid adieu and leave a farewell message or graffiti on a common piece of cloth given to them. A great way to bring smile on everyone’s face, ‘Kalakriti’ succeeds in spreading joy, unity and togetherness in the small tight-knit community of ours.

4. KRIDANSH
Kridansh is organized to give sports enthusiasts a chance to pursue their passion in sports. Matches are organized both outdoor and indoor, such as Gully Cricket, Street Football and Single Court Basketball, Chess, Carom, Badminton, Table Tennis, and Swimming. Full-fledged dedication from participants and organizers makes Kridansh one of the liveliest events of the year.

SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE

Before joining engineering, many students are confident, curious, logical and studious. These are almost pre-requisites for a degree in engineer, and I was no different. However, when you join an IIT, you realize that you're exposure to the real world has been highly limited, that your opportunities to engage your curiosities, to structure logical and engineered solutions to problems, both theoretical and practical real life ones, have never been tested.
Campus life in IIT Jodhpur changes students to broad-minded bright individuals, capable of networking, academically proficient, and with a whole new experience to face the real world. The most amazing aspect of campus life is that it brings together a plethora of diverse personalities, puts them through almost identical tasks, events, courses and activities, and yet manages to give each person a unique experience. Though engineering is the focus of the courses, it is not the most important thing a student takes away from these four years. Friends, memories, activities like sports, technical projects, cultural events and diverse hobbies like photography, painting, kite-flying and trekking - there is everything you could wish for to experience. The most sacred tool is time management.
After completing my degree in 2013, I've decided to combine my inherent interest in technology and my passion for strategy and management at National Instruments as an Application Engineer. My thanks will always remain with the institute for making me what I am today, giving me the opportunities to explore the world with freedom and resources. IIT Jodhpur is entrepreneurial, it's different, and it gives you lessons you never imagined you would learn when you took up engineering.

  • Document what you do: You always experiment, try out cool things everyday (they may not seem cool to you, but it maybe for others), just take some time out and make a note of that, write a blog post. Not because that would be show-off but because it will go a long way in inspiring and helping your juniors or any other person from outside your college as well. I can vouch for it because there have been many blogs from whom I have taken inspiration.
  • Be passionate for engineering: Make things, create! Its the best way to have fun, when code that you had been hacking on runs, or the Arduino LED glows, the ecstasy is incomparable. At the end you will end up tinkering with a lot of things and a whole bunch of messy ideas in your head.
  • Give back: You will always find yourself looking up answers on Google, Stack Overflow and the like. Take a moment after you solve your problem, share it with the world, answer a few questions on Stack Overflow. Improve the community as a member, because if others hadn not contributed, you would not have found the answers.
  • Open your eyes and ears: Look outside your world, there are a lot of great people to meet and find out. Keep yourself updated with the latest from the tech world. Read other blogs, HN, etc.
  • Re-invent the wheel: You can go ahead and try to make a square wheel (does not matter if you fail), the experience that you gain along the way will be what will be valuable to you. Do not be afraid to re-implement something because it already exists - who knows, yours could be different or better?
  • Find your specialty: That one thing that you are good at, do it often, iterate until you are good. You find yourself drawn to cool user-interfaces then just do HTML/CSS just do not for Python because your friend is doing it. As it is stated in the Unix Philosophy - Do one thing, do it well!
