The state government of Tamil Nadu and other private organisations have launched the TN scholarships for its domiciles. The state government provides several scholarship schemes for school students, college students, and researchers. As per the academic year 2023-24, the scholarship invites applications from students with an SC or ST background to help them financially.

.TN scholarships, or Tamil Nadu scholarships, reward deserving children with monetary benefits through its various schemes. The last date for institutes to submit applications for the ADW scholarship was March 15, 2024 (tentatively).

TN Scholarship List 2024

The subsidiary departments of the Tamil Nadu government and many private organisations provide TN scholarships for candidates in need. Students from class I can apply for the scholarships. Listed below are some of the popular TN scholarships:

ADW Scholarship 

Most families belonging to the Adi Dravidar community lack primary resources and access to education and employment. Hence, the Adi Dravidar and tribal welfare departments have launched several schemes. The government of Tamil Nadu funds the TN scholarship schemes to improve the community's living conditions.
Interested candidates can obtain the TN SC scholarship application form online. They can also track the TN scholarship status for the Adi Dravidar Welfare (ADW) scheme by visiting the official portal.

Eligibility Criteria 

The candidates should submit the following requirements:

  • For Pre-Matric Students
    • Candidates should belong to the SC/ST category to be eligible for this TN SC scholarship.
    • The family income should not exceed INR 2,00,000 per annum.
    • The students should be in classes IX and X.
  • For Children of Unclean Occupation Workers
    • The student's parents should engage in unclean occupations like waste picking, tanning, flaying and scavenging.
    • There is no restriction on caste and income limit.
  • For Post-Matric Students
    • Candidates from class XI to PhD level can apply.
    • Their family's income should not exceed INR 2,50,000 per annum.
    • The applicants should belong to the SC/ST category to apply for this TN SC scholarship.
  • For Students Pursuing Higher Education
    • The candidates should belong to the SC, ST or SCC category.
    • They should be staying at institutional hostels.
    • Their family income should not be more than INR 2,00,000. However, students staying in government and private college hostels have no income limit.
  • For Girl Students
    • Female students who are studying in government and government-aided schools can apply.
    • They should belong to the adi dravidar or tribal communities.
    • There is no income limit for girls applying to this TN scholarship scheme.

Rewards 

The TN scholarship for school students is available for students from class I to class X. Tabulated below are the details of the rewards:

  • For Pre-Matric Students
  • The selected SC/ST students will receive INR 150 per annum.
  • Additionally, they will receive the following maintenance allowance each month for ten months:
    • Day scholars - INR 150
    • Hostellers - INR 350
  • The government will also pay the following Adhoc grants for a year:
    • Day scholars - INR 750
    • Hostellers - INR 1,000
  • For Children of unclean occupation workers
    • Day Scholars in class I to X
      • Maintenance allowance - INR 110 per month
      • Adhoc grant - INR 750 per annum
    • Hostellers from Class VIII to X
      • Maintenance allowance - INR 700 per month
      • Adhoc grant - INR 1,000 per annum
  • For Post-Matric Students
  • The candidates will receive the following maintenance allowances each month:
    • Day scholars - INR 230 to INR 550
    • Hostellers - INR 380 to INR 1,200
  • The government will reimburse the non-refundable fees payable to the government or government-aided institutions.
  • They will also exempt the fees for students studying in self-financing colleges.
  • For Higher Education
    • Candidates pursuing an undergraduate degree or polytechnic diploma courses will receive INR 7,500 per annum.
    • Those studying for a postgraduate degree or professional courses will obtain INR 8,000 per annum.
  • For Girl Students
    • The government will transfer the TN scholarship amount to the candidate's mother's post office savings account or in the student's bank account.
  • The selected girl students will receive the following TN scholarship amount each year:
    • Class III to V - 500
    • Class VI - INR 1,000
    • Classes VII and VIII - INR 1,500 

BC, MBC and Minorities Scholarship 

The Department of Backward Classes and minorities welfare provides the TN govt BC scholarship, also popularly known as TN minority scholarships. Students from class VI to those pursuing a post-matric level of studies can apply for this TN scholarship.

The objective of the TN govt BC scholarship is to uplift the socio-economic conditions of people belonging to the minority, BC, MBC and DNC communities. The applicants can check the official e-district TN scholarship portal for more details.

Eligibility Criteria 

The TN govt BC scholarship eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Candidates should be domiciles of Tamil Nadu.
  • They should belong to the minority, BC, MBC or DNC community.
  • There should not be any graduates in their families.
  • Their family income should not exceed INR 1,00,000 per annum from all sources.
  • The students should have enrolled in government or government-aided English medium schools or colleges.
  • For Pre-Matric Level
    • They should be in classes VI to X.
  • For Post-Matric Courses
    • The candidates from class XI to research level can apply to the TN govt BC scholarship.
  • For Professional and Diploma Courses
    • The students should be pursuing a professional course such as medicine, engineering, veterinary, law and agriculture.
    • They can study in government, government-aided or self-financing colleges.
    • Their family income should not exceed INR 1,00,000 per annum.

Rewards 

The selected students of the TN minority scholarship will receive the following rewards:

  • The government offers financial aid to the top ten students with the highest Class X board exam marks from each district.
  • In addition, the state will also supply free textbooks to the students in class I to class XII.
  • For Pre-Matric Level
    • Class VI to VIII
      • The government will grant INR 200, i.e., INR 20 per month for ten months.
    • Class IX and X
      • The students will receive INR 250, i.e., INR 25 per month for ten months.
  • For Post-Matric Courses
    • The government will reimburse INR 500 per annum towards tuition fees for the students in classes XI and XII.
    • Students pursuing three-year undergraduate degree courses such as BCom, BSc and BA will receive free education.
    • In addition, they will grant the special fee and non-refundable fees as prescribed by the government.
    • They will sanction the exam fee in full for the class XII students.
  • For Diploma and Professional Courses
    • The Tamil Nadu government will pay the tuition fee, special fee, exam fee and other non-refundable fees as per the government norms.

TN Scholarship for Differently-Abled Children 

Under the state government of Tamil Nadu, the welfare department of differently-abled persons provides TN scholarships to students with disabilities. Candidates from class I to the postgraduate level can apply for this TN scholarship. The government offers up to INR 7,000 to the selected students.

Eligibility Criteria 

The TN scholarship eligibility criteria for differently-abled children are as follows:

  • The candidates should be residents of Tamil Nadu.
  • They should be in class I or above.
  • They should hold an ID card issued by the welfare board of differently-abled.
  • The students should study in government recognised schools and colleges.
  • The students should have scored a minimum of 40% marks in the previous qualifying examination.
  • For Children of Parents with Disabilities
    • Children from class XI to postgraduate level, including ITI and diploma courses, can apply to this TN scholarship.

  • Students will receive the following TN scholarship amount:
    • Class I to V - INR 1000 per annum
    • Class VI to VIII - INR 3000  per annum
    • Class IX to class XII - INR 4,000 per annum
    • Polytechnic and Undergraduation - INR 6,000 per annum
    • Postgraduation - INR 7,000 per annum
  • Children whose parents are differently-abled will receive up to INR 6,000 under the TN scholarship.

Perignar Anna Memorial Award 

The Department of backward classes and most backwards classes and the Department of minority welfare provide the Perignar Anna Memorial Award for students belonging to the minority, DNC, BC and MBC categories. This TN scholarship will recognise deserving students and enable them to pursue their professional degrees in Tamil Nadu. 

Eligibility Criteria 

The Perpignan Anna memorial TN scholarship eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • The students should be bonafide residents of Tamil Nadu.
  • The government will recognise two male and two female students who have secured the highest marks in each district's Class XII board exam.
  • They should be pursuing a professional degree in medicine, engineering, agriculture, veterinarian, law, etc.
  • The applicants should belong to the BC, MBC, DNC or minority community.
  • There is no limit on the family income.

  • Each student will receive a TN scholarship amount of INR 5,000 per annum for four or five years, depending on the course duration.

Thanthai Periyar Memorial Award 

Like the Perarignar Anna Memorial Award, the Thanthai Periyar Memorial Award will recognise two male and two female students who scored the highest marks in the Class X board exam. However, this TN scholarship scheme is available only to BC, MBC and DNC students. The students should currently be pursuing a polytechnic diploma course at a government-recognised institution.

Eligibility Criteria 

The candidates applying for the Thanthai Periyar memorial award should fulfil the following requirements:

  • The students should be permanent residents of Tamil Nadu.
  • The government will select two boys and two girls from each district.
  • They should score the highest marks in the Class X board exam.
  • The candidates should be from the BC, MBC or DNC category.
  • They should be pursuing a polytechnic diploma course.
  • There is no income ceiling for this TN scholarship scheme.

  • Each student will receive INR 3,000 per annum for three years.

TN Scholarship for PhD Students 

The State Government of Tamil Naud offers TN scholarships to students pursuing a full-time PhD degree in a government or government-aided college of arts and science. However, the candidates studying for a part-time PhD degree or those availing benefits from other scholarships cannot apply to the TN scholarship scheme for PhD students.

Eligibility Criteria 

The eligibility criteria for the TN govt scholarship for students pursuing a PhD degree are as follows:

  • The candidates in the first, second or third year of PhD degree can apply to this TN scholarship.
  • They should be studying for a full-time degree in a government or government-aided science or art college.
  • The applicants should have secured a minimum of 60% marks in the postgraduate degree.

  • The candidates will obtain INR 3,000 per month.

EVR Nagammai TN Scholarship 

The State government of Tamil Nadu has initiated the EVR Nagammai TN govt scholarship for female students aspiring to pursue higher education. Eligibility Criteria 

The minimum requirements for the EVR Nagammai TN scholarship are as follows:

  • The candidates should be residing in Tamil Nadu.
  • They should belong to the BC, DNC or MBC category.
  • The EVR Nagammai TN scholarship is available only for female students.
  • They should be pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in arts or science.
  • The applicants should be studying in a government recognised institution located in Tamil Nadu.

  • The government will reward the students with variable monetary benefits.

RIMC Dehradun Scholarship 

The directorate of collegiate education under the government of Tamil Nadu provides the RIMC Dehradun scholarship. Young cadets studying at the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) can apply to this TN scholarship scheme.

The state government supports the cadets by granting a TN scholarship amount starting from INR 10,000. As a result, over 50% of the cadets receive scholarships to support their education. However, the cadets should refund the scholarship if they leave before completing five years in school. 

Eligibility Criteria 

The eligibility criteria for the RIMC Dehradun scholarship are as follows:

  • The candidates should be bonafide residents of Tamil Nadu.
  • They should be studying in a Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun.

  • The selected cadets of Tamil Nadu will receive INR 12,000 per annum.

National Talent Search Exam (NTSE) 

Candidates residing in Tamil Nadu and studying class X can apply for the NTSE scholarship. Students below 18 years of age who are studying distance education or open schools can also apply for the scholarship. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) conducts the NTSE for students across India.

Eligibility Criteria 

The eligibility criteria for the National Talent Search Exam (NTSE) are as follows:

  • The candidates should be Indian citizens.
  • They should be studying class X.
  • The candidates from the reserved categories will obtain reservations as per the government norms.
  • They should not be over 18 years of age.
  • The students should score at least 60% aggregate in every qualifying exam to apply for the NTSE.
  • Indian candidates pursuing overseas education can directly appear for the NTSE stage II exam.

Vidyadhan Scholarship 

The Sarojini Damodaran Foundation supports deserving students from financially challenged families to pursue a college education through the Vidyadhan scholarship. Candidates who have cleared the class X board exam can apply for the scholarship. The Vidyadhan scholarship is available to students from selected states, including Tamil Nadu. 

Eligibility Criteria 

The minimum requirements for the Vidyadhan scholarship are as follows:

  • The candidates should be domiciles of Tamil Nadu or other selected states.
  • They should have obtained a minimum of 90% marks in the Class X board exam.
  • Differently-abled students should have secured 75% marks in the Class X exam to be eligible for the scholarship.
  • The candidates should have completed the class X exam in Tamil Nadu or from other eligible states.
  • Their family income should not exceed INR 2,00,000 from all sources.

The organisers will select the candidates after a rigorous process. They will receive the following benefits:

  • The scholars will receive up to INR 6,000 per annum to aid their class XI and XII education.
  • The foundation will invite the selected students to attend a mentoring programme.
  • In addition, students who score well in the secondary level education will obtain a scholarship amount, ranging from INR 10,000 to INR 60,000 per annum. However, the amount will vary according to the state, course, duration of the degree, etc.

How to Apply Online? 

Tamil Nadu students who want to benefit from professional courses, such as the Vidyadhan scholarship and NTSE, should submit their application forms online through different official websites.

They should ensure they scan the necessary documents, convert them into the prescribed format, and upload them when filling out the application forms. Mentioned below are the details of the application process for the TN government scholarships available online.

For Professional Courses (BC, MBC and Minority) 

Tamil Nadu domiciles pursuing professional courses belonging to the BC, MBC or minority categories can apply for the scholarship online through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

The students previously submitted the applications on the MOMA scholarship portal. However, the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MOMA) has requested that the candidates apply through the NSP portal due to technical issues. Therefore, the candidates applying for the first time should register themselves on the NSP portal.

How to Apply for the National Talent Search Exam (NTSE)? 

The students can apply for the NTSE scholarship through the official NCERT website. They can submit the applications online or offline and obtain the NTSE application form one month before the exam. In addition, they should also receive a signature from the head of the institution to complete the NTSE application process.

Those applying offline should attach copies of the records along with the TN scholarship application form.
