Graduate Marine Engineering is a post-graduate course under the marine science spectrum. This is a 1-year course that is divided into 2 semesters of study which enlightens students on both applications of engineering in marine science and marine technology. The course deals with the production, design, functioning, and maintenance of marine equipment and its operations. This course also brings in the concept of operating various nautical engineering systems and basic electronic components used in that. The curriculum is designed to equally focus equally on theoretical and practical marine and mechanical engineering, with a greater emphasis on skill sets required to operate, manage and maintain shipboard machinery. The job opportunities for graduates of this course aren't restricted to only the Indian navy but also many private marine-based shipment/research companies do hire marine engineers for operations.
Graduate Marine Engineering Course course fees may vary based on the university or college the student is willing to enroll in. Often, the course fee varies upon the materials and lecture timings provided by the university towards course completion. The average course fee charged by various public and private universities starts from INR 3.6 L per annum and also subjected to a decrease based on scholarships offered by universities.
Merchant Navy is one of the key contributors to boosting the economy of a country. Marine transportation and marine research have various job scopes both in India and abroad. Owing to risk factors and job difficulty, marine engineers are often offered lucrative salary packages. The average salary package for a Graduate Marine Technology Graduate may start from 5.5 L per annum depending upon the experience, job sector and the role they're employed.

Graduate Marine Engineering is a year-long course constructed for candidates who want to become marine engineers. The course is generally taken up after under-graduation in the engineering domain. This course is a path exchanger for engineering undergraduates as it specializes in applying engineering concepts in marine science. The course is usually divided into 8 months in-class training and 4 months onboard training, however, the time period may vary institution to institution.
GME is the study of ocean engineering or oceanographic as well as engineering of oil rigs, ships, boats, and any other marine structure. The course also gives an idea about marine engines, marine turbines, boiler, etc which are basically mechanical oriented. The main focus of this course is understanding the concept, design and operational process required in the development, structure, operation, and maintenance of marine vessels. It also trains students in practical engine room scenarios and provides onboard knowledge on how to tackle various problems in the engine room and cabin.
This course combines engineering fields of electrical, mechanical, electronics and computer science in the discipline of Marine Engineering. Minimum Eligibility required for this course is a Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. GME gives a candidate more scope as their profession will not be limited only to one field but they can opt for many others such as electrical engineering, power, and nuclear plant,
The syllabus of this course includes subjects such as:
After the completion of the GME course the candidate will have to obtain Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCE), this is mandatory before employment. The candidates are often employed as class IV marine engineer officers and will be elevated to higher roles based on performance. In the private sector, graduates are employed as Cruise Engineer, Cruise architect, Shipping officer, etc.
For candidates who are interested in joining the Merchant Navy, this course gives them a direct way. This course is also useful to aspirants who aim to join the navy sector as engineer officers either onboard or off waters. Through this course, a student can also get sponsorship for their training program through colleges.
This course is an extension of mechanical engineering applied in marine systems. It also involves the majority of mechanical engineering subjects such as engine analysis, steam turbine test, etc. which will be a cakewalk for mechanical engineering undergraduates.
Career options for marine engineers are not only limited to on-board job roles, but various other roles are also:
Some of the essential course preparation tips for a candidate who wants to pursue Graduate Marine Engineering are:
Get to know of the Syllabus: The syllabus of the course is one of the essential factors which a student should focus upon as this helps a student to focus during the time of the examination.
Make a Plan: Make a course plan that can help the student to plan according to the study of the work which enables them to keep both balanced.
Connect With Fellow Students: Start connecting with peers who can help you with providing an exchange of knowledge that might help you to excel in various other forms of music.
Keep Updated: Keep yourself updated with the latest trends and innovations in marine engineering fields by subscribing to weekly magazines or webpages.
