Hindustan Institute Of Maritime Training (HIMT) was established in 1998 by a merchant navy engineer in Chennai. The institute believes that education had played a vital role in the success of an individual. HMT's achievement of its mission is guided by a Governing Council, which prioritizes the institute’s goals. The institute offers full-time courses in the field of nautical science and marine engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate level. HIMT Chennai admission is based on the merit marks scored by a candidate in 10+2. HIMT placement is good and many reputed companies visit the campus.

HIMT Chennai is affiliated to Indian Maritime University with the main mission of the institute is to make the best marines in the world who will protect and respect the global environment and are strong enough to face all global aspects.

HIMT Chennai facilities on the campus consist of classrooms, laboratories, library, practical training facilities are provided by way of a large well-equipped workshop, engineering infrastructure, simulator, mock-ups and above-all ship on campus, replica to a Ships Engine room for practical training.

• Computer labs include interactive computer-based training (CBT) programs like Maritime English, Engine Room Simulator, planned maintenance System, ARPA, ROC, Safe Navigation and many more.
• Academy has a separate Kitchen to prepare Hygienic Food. Food served is of mixed cuisine (includes North Indian Style, South Indian style, etc) to help candidates to get accustomed to various types of food preparations. The diet is well balanced and the food is wholesome.

   - The eligibility criteria for B.Tech course is candidates must have passed 10+2 with PCM and English as subjects and 60% marks in PCM and at least 50% marks in English and admission is on the basis of IMU-CET scores, Psychometric Test, Medical examination, Panel Interview, and Pre-Sea Training.
