NIFT 2022 B.Des Courses Cut-off (Campus-wise)

The Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program of NIFT is one of the most competitive design courses in India. In 2022, thousands of applicants competed over scarce seats in 17 NIFT campuses. The cutoff ranks were different according to the various specializations like Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Knitwear Design, Fashion Communication, and Leather Design. Your chances of admission were very much based on your All India Rank (AIR), category and campus of choice.

The highest closing ranks in the General category were recorded by NIFT Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru campuses with Fashion Design and Communication being the major bracket. The other campuses such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Gandhinagar also had high demand. Opening and closing ranks were different for each category, i.e., General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwD and the candidates of reserved categories got admission at a relatively higher rank.

Here’s a detailed table of opening and closing ranks for B.Des programs across major NIFT campuses, based on official NIFT 2022 Cutoff data:

NIFT Cutoff Ranges vs Percentile or Score Analysis

It is important to know the relationship between your score and percentile and NIFT cutoff ranks to have an accurate prediction on your chances of admission. As opposed to exams such as CMAT which publish percentiles, NIFT releases All India Ranks (AIR) which are calculated based on a composite score calculated on the basis of Creative Ability Test (CAT), General Ability Test (GAT) and Situation Test. The higher the score is, the better the AIR and that means higher is the probability of getting a seat in one of the best campuses such as Delhi or Mumbai.

Below is an indicative breakdown to help you understand the approximate correlation:

Counselling Rounds and Cutoff Movement

NIFT counselling is conducted in several rounds and in each round, there is a change in cutoff ranks depending on seat availability and candidate withdrawal. If you are not being allotted a seat in the first round, don't lose hope. Many candidates withdraw or change their course of preference and as a consequence, the cutoff decreases in later rounds. This provides a chance for students with a slightly lower rank to take up seats in top-level or middle-level campuses.

For example, a rank 100 candidate General may not get Fashion Communication in NIFT Delhi during Round 1 but the same seat is still available at Round 2 if a higher rank candidate shifts his/her preference. Similarly, seats in the Chennai, Gandhinagar, or Hyderabad campuses are vacant till Round 3, especially for courses like Accessory Design, Textile Design, or Knitwear Design.

Reserved category candidates also enjoy a benefit in subsequent rounds. OBC or SC/ST category seats go empty in initial rounds and are reserved for the General category in final rounds, providing an opportunity to others. However, it is advisable to continue monitoring the official counselling website, reprioritize your choices and be present in every round.
