What is the Fulbright Scholarship?

Administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the Fulbright Scholarship provides academic opportunities in the US to students from different countries. Many Bi-National Fulbright Commissions have been set up in different countries to promote mutual understanding and develop a friendly and peaceful relationship between the people of the US and other countries. The United States India Education Foundation (USIEF) is the commission set in India for providing opportunities to Indian students to help in their personal and professional growth.

Fulbright Scholarship Program Types:

The different scholarships/ fellowships under the Fulbright Scholarship Scheme are listed below:

Fulbright Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

Different fellowships/ scholarships under the Fulbright Scholarship have different requirements of eligibility criteria for the students to apply. A set of common eligibility criteria for all the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships is listed below:

  • The applicant should be a responsible Indian citizen with good knowledge about the Indian culture and civilization as it helps in developing friendship and understanding between students of India and the US.
  • The candidate should have a high level of academic/ professional achievements.
  • The students should be proficient in the English language. He/ she should have to take the TOEFL English language proficiency test.
  • The selected candidates should be available in person for the interview test at USIEF office in New Delhi.
  • USIEF should be informed in advance if the applicant needs to travel abroad during the application cycle of the particular year.
  •  Employed candidates should be eligible for leave.
  • The applicant should be in good health and should not be holding/ applying for a permanent residence in the US.
  • The candidate should be willing to return to India after the completion of the fellowship in the US.
  • Candidates who do not have extensive recent US experience are given preference.

The detailed eligibility criteria for the different Fulbright scholarships/ fellowships are given below:

1.

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

  • The applicant should have completed a 4-year bachelor/ master’s degree equivalent to that of the US with at least 55% marks from a recognized Indian university/ college.
  • Candidates can apply for any of the following fields such as Arts and Culture Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies, Environmental Science/ Studies, Higher Education Administration, International Legal Studies, Public Administration, Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies/ Gender Studies.
  • He/ she should have at least 3 years of full-time professional work experience in the relevant field.
  • The applicant should have community service experience and should have leadership skills.
  • The candidate should not have an academic degree from any US university.
  • He/ she should not be enrolled in a US degree program.
  • Employed candidates should submit an Employer’s Endorsement Form which indicates that leave will be granted if he/ she gets selected for the fellowship.

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

  • The candidate should be an alumni of the Fulbright-Nehru grants.
  • Previous USIEF Alumni Award recipients are not eligible to apply for the fellowship.
  • The applicants should be residing in India while applying for the fellowship and also during the project period.
  • The students can organize seminars/ workshops in Education, Environment, Energy & Climate change, Health, Social Inclusion & Economic Development, Visual & Performing Arts, Women Empowerment, and Urban & Regional Planning.

Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

  • The candidate should have secured a Ph.D. degree within the last 4 years.
  • He/ she should have his/ her research work published in a reputed journal.
  • The applicant should have a high level of academic/ professional achievement to his/ her credit.

Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships

  • The applicant should have a Ph.D.  degree or an equivalent published research work along with at least 5 years of relevant teaching/ research experience.
  • Non-Academic professionals should have a master’s degree or equivalent published work with relevant professional standing along with at least 5 years of work experience.

5.

Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar

  • The candidate should be a mid to senior-level college/ university administrator such as Registrar/ Vice-Chancellor/ Dean/ Department Head/ Foreign Student Advisor working at an Indian university/ institution with at least 2 years experience in the respective area.
  • The applicant should have the responsibility of enhancing the International scope of the institute and should wish to build the capacity of the faculty and students through various international collaborations/ exchange and innovative curricular design.
  • He/ she should have a high level of academic/ professional achievement to his/ her credit.

6.

Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship

  • Students applying for Doctoral Research should be registered for a Ph.D. degree at an Indian university/ institute.
  • Candidates applying for Postdoctoral fellowships should have obtained a Ph.D. degree in the last 4 years.
  • The scholar’s thesis should not be submitted earlier than 3 months after the end of the grant.
  • The candidates who are at the end of their Ph.D. thesis submission are not eligible to apply for the fellowship.
  • Ph.D. applicants should have a high level of academic/ professional achievement to his/ her credit and should have their research work published in reputed journals.

7.

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program

  • The candidate should be an Indian citizen and should be residing in India throughout the application, nomination, and selection process.
  • He/ she should display maturity, reliability, integrity, and professionalism during the entire course.
  • The candidate should be fluent in the English language and should have a TOEFL score of at least 213 (CBT), 70-80 (iBT) or 550 (PBT).
  • The applicant should have passed a Master’s degree in English language, English/ American Literature, American Studies, Linguistics, Comparative Literature or related area with a very good academic record.
  • The candidate should be a young English teacher/ training to become an English teacher/ young professional in a related field.
  • Applicants with prior teaching experience are preferred.

8.

Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program

  • The candidate should be a school teacher of 6th to 12th grade in a school within India.
  • He/ she should have at least 5 years of teaching experience in subjects like Social Studies, Science, English, Mathematics, Special Education or English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
  • The applicant should hold a bachelor’s as well as a teacher’s training degree and should be residing in India during the form submission and interview.
  • The candidate should have scored at least 61 on iBT TOEFL and 450 on paper-based TOEFL or equivalent in English language examination.
  • He/ she should be living and teaching in states such as Chandigarh/ Delhi/ Haryana/ Himachal Pradesh/ Jammu & Kashmir/ Punjab/ Rajasthan/ Uttarakhand/ Uttar Pradesh/ Chhattisgarh/ Goa/ Gujarat/ Madhya Pradesh/ Maharashtra/ Daman and Diu/ Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
  • The applicant should be willing to continue teaching after completion of the program.

9.

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers

  • The applicant should be a full-time teacher with at least 5 years of full-time teaching experience in any subject.
  • The candidate should hold a bachelor’s as well as a teacher’s training degree and should be residing in India during the form submission and interview.
  • He/ she should have excellent command over the English language.
  • Teacher Trainers are also eligible to apply for the program.
  • The applicant should be living and teaching in states such as Chandigarh/ Delhi/ Haryana/ Himachal Pradesh/ Jammu & Kashmir/ Punjab/ Rajasthan/ Uttarakhand/ Uttar Pradesh/ Chhattisgarh/ Goa/ Gujarat/ Madhya Pradesh/ Maharashtra/ Daman and Diu/ Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

10.

Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program

  • The applicant should have completed a Master’s degree or Professional degree of a minimum of 4 years duration.
  • He/ she should have at least 5 years of professional work experience in the relevant field and should possess excellent leadership qualities.
  • The candidate should have a record of public service in the community.
  • The applicant should be willing to return to India after the completion of the program.
  • University teachers with no Management/ Policy responsibilities are not eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have attended a graduation program for1 year or higher in the US are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants having dual citizenship of the US or permanent resident status cannot apply.

Fulbright Scholarship Rewards and Benefits:

Fulbright Scholarship Selection Process:

Candidates are shortlisted based on the eligibility criteria and are called for an interview in person at the USIEF office in New Delhi. The decision of the Fulbright Committee with regard to the selection process is considered final. The selection criteria based on which candidates are selected are listed below:

  1. The academic/ professional capability of the candidates.
  2. Communication skills of the applicant.
  3. The commitment of the candidate towards the community service or service towards the nation.
  4. The merit of the proposed Fulbright project.
  5. The need for the candidate to conduct research work in the US.
  6. Outcomes, potential professional impact, and benefits.
  7. The candidate’s maturity, leadership qualities, motivation, purpose, and cultural adaptability.
  8. The responsibility of the applicant as a Cultural Ambassador to contribute beyond his/ her field of study.
