What is the DAAD Scholarship?

Awarded by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, German Academic Exchange Service, the DAAD Scholarship provides funding for the international exchange of students and researchers. DAAD has set up a network of regional offices and information centers in the partner countries through which all the information about the DAAD scholarship programs, grants, and bilateral research projects is provided to the students. DAAD India is one such regional office set in India which caters to students from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

DAAD Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

Different schemes under the DAAD Scholarship have different eligibility criteria for application. The detailed eligibility criteria for each of the schemes are listed below:

Bilateral Exchange of Academics

  • Under this program, the exchange of scientists and academics is supported by DAAD to improve international relations and bilateral research cooperation.
  • The candidate should have completed the doctoral degree to be eligible for the scholarship.
  • The applicant should be working at a research institute/ university as an academic/ scientist.

2.

Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS)

  • The applicant should be a graduate from any field.
  • He/ she should have professional work experience of at least 2 years.

3.

DLR-DAAD Research Fellowship Programme

  • Highly-qualified doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as senior scientists, can apply for this fellowship program.

4.

Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master’s Scholarship for Public Policy and Good Governance- PPGG)

  • The applicant should have graduated with a first-class degree in the field of Social Science/ Political Science/ Law/ Economics/ Public Administration.
  • Candidates interested in the social and economic development of the home country are preferred.
  • Mid-career professionals are also eligible to apply.

5.

India IIT Master-Sandwich-Programme (IIT)

  • Applicants should be studying in the 2nd semester of a 2-year Master’s program or 4th semester of a 3-year Master’s program or 8th semester of a dual degree program from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

6.

Master of European Law (MEL)

  • The candidate should be a first-class Law graduate.

7.

Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME)

  • The applicant should have completed the Ph.D. degree before starting the fellowship.
  • He/ she should fulfill the scheme’s mobility rule i.e. the applicant can choose any country (except Germany) for their research abroad provided they have not worked/ studied in that country for more than 12 months in the 3 years preceding the application deadline.

8.

Practical Traineeships for Foreign Students of Natural and Technical Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry (IAESTE)

  • The applicant should be pursuing courses in Natural & Technical Science/ Agriculture/ Forestry.
  • The candidate should be enrolled with the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE).

Research Grants - Cotutelle Doctoral Programmes

  • Highly-qualified doctoral applicants are eligible to apply. 
  • Graduates who have taken admission for a doctoral program at the time of beginning their grant-supported research are also eligible to apply. 

10.

Research Grants- Doctoral Programmes in Germany

  • Highly-qualified young academics/ scientists who have completed their master’s degree/ diploma are eligible to apply.
  • In exceptional cases, even graduates are eligible to apply for the grant.

11.

Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the field of Architecture

  • The candidate should have a first-class graduate degree in Architecture/ Interior Design/ Monument Conservation/ Urban Planning/ Urban Development/ Regional Planning/ Landscape Architecture/ Landscape Planning.
  • The applicant should have knowledge of the language of instruction of the respective institute.

12.

Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the field of Music

  • The applicant should have a first-class university degree in Music, by the time of commencement of the scholarship-funded study program.
  • The candidate should have completed the degree no longer than 6 years before the application deadline.
  • If the applicant does not have a bachelor’s degree in Music, then he/ she should have exhausted all the training options for their choice of instrument in their country of origin. 
  • The candidate should also know the language of instruction which matches the requirements of the respective institution.

13.

Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the field of Performing Arts

  • The candidate should have completed the bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts with first-class rank, no longer than 6 years before the application deadline.
  • The applicant should have obtained the degree, by the time of commencement of the scholarship-funded study program.
  • The applicants of Drama and Direction should have very good knowledge of the German language.
  • The candidates who have applied for Musicals/ Performance studies/ dance and Choreography should have basic knowledge of German and a very good knowledge of English.

14.

Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the field of Fine Arts, Design, Visual Communication, and Film

  • The applicants should have a first-class Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts/ Design/ Visual Communication and Film.
  • The applicant should have completed the degree no longer than 6 years before the application deadline.
  • The candidate should also know the language of instruction which matches the requirements of the respective institution.

15.

University Summer Courses offered in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates

  • The students pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field can apply for the summer course.
  • Bachelors degree applicants should have completed 2 academic years at the start of the program.
  • The candidate should be at least 18 years of age at the start of the funded program.
  • The applicants should be fluent in the German language with a minimum language level of B1.

DAAD Scholarship Rewards and Benefits:

The candidates selected for the DAAD Scholarship get health insurance, rent subsidies, and other allowance in addition to the scholarship amount. The detailed scholarship benefits provided by the DAAD Scholarship are listed below:

  • Professors get EUR 2150 per month.

  • The candidates receive funding based on the academic level. 
  • Graduates get EUR 850 per month.
  • Doctoral candidates get EUR 1200 per month.
  • Health, Accident and Personal liability insurance is also covered.
  • Candidates also receive a travel allowance.

3.

DLR-DAAD Research Fellowship Programme

  • Doctoral students pursuing a doctorate degree in Germany get a fellowship amount of EUR 1760 per month which includes flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, and family allowance.
  • Postdoctoral students undergoing research in Germany get EUR 2400 per month as fellowship amount along with other allowances.
  • Senior scientists undergoing research in Germany get EUR 2760 per month as a fellowship amount along with other allowances.

4.

Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master’s Scholarship for Public Policy and Good Governance- PPGG)

  • Scholarship amount of EUR 850 per month along with health insurance, travel allowance, study and research subsidy and also rent subsidy for spouse and children if applicable.

5.

India IIT Master-Sandwich-Programme (IIT)

  • Scholarship amount of EUR 850 per month.
  • Health, Accident and Personal liability insurance is also covered.
  • 4-6 weeks of the German language course is provided at the host university.
  • One-time research allowance of EUR 266.
  • A monthly rent subsidy is provided if applicable.

6.

Master of European Law (MEL)

  • Selected candidates get a scholarship amount of EUR 850 per month.
  • Health, Accident and Personal liability insurance is also covered
  • Travel allowance, rent subsidy and family allowance is provided if applicable.
  • Study and Research subsidy of EUR 460.
  • 2 months of the German language course is provided in Germany before the start of the scholarship.

7.

Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME)

  • Funding is provided to selected students through a temporary job position at a selected German University for a period of 18 months.
  • The remuneration offered is as per the prevailing rate for postdoctoral researchers.

8.

Practical Traineeships for Foreign Students of Natural and Technical Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry (IAESTE)

  • Selected interns get EUR 650 per month.
  • The candidates also get medical, accident, and personal liability insurance cover.

9.

Research Grants - Cotutelle Doctoral Programmes

  • Grant of EUR 1200 per month for doctoral candidates during their stay in Germany.
  • Medical, Accident and Personal liability insurance is also covered.
  • One-time research allowance, Travel allowance, accommodation expenses, and other benefits are also provided.

10.

Research Grants- Doctoral Programmes in Germany

  • Selected candidates receive grants on the basis of the academic level.
  • Graduates get EUR 850 per month.
  • Doctoral candidates get EUR 1200 per month.

DAAD Scholarship Application Process:

The different scholarships under the DAAD Scholarship have different application procedures. The candidates are selected based on academic achievements and the quality of the project. The application process for all the scholarships are given below:

 Bilateral Exchange of Academics:

  • The application process for this exchange program is done online through the official DAAD portal.
  • The portal opens 6 weeks before the last date of the program. 

Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS):

  • Interested applicants should visit the official DAAD portal and download the application form.

DLR-DAAD Research Fellowship Programme:

  • Applicants should apply online through the official DAAD portal.

Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master’s Scholarship for Public Policy and Good Governance- PPGG):

  • Applicants should submit the completed application form to the respective universities.

India IIT Master-Sandwich-Programme (IIT):

  • Applicants should apply online through the official DAAD portal.
  • He/ she should submit the important documents to the Dean’s office of the home institution.

Master of European Law (MEL):

  • Applicants should apply online through the official DAAD portal.
  • A copy of the ‘Application Summary’ should be sent via post to the Regional Office in New Delhi.

Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME):

  • Applicants should apply online through the official DAAD portal.

Practical Traineeships for Foreign Students of Natural and Technical Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry (IAESTE):

  • To apply for the Internship program in Germany, the applicant should contact the IAESTE National Committee of India for the application submission.

Research Grants - Cotutelle Doctoral Programmes:

  • Interested applicants can apply for the DAAD Scholarship/ Fellowship online through the DAAD portal.
  • Also, the application summary should be sent in PDF format to the application address via post.
