About MCAT Exam

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is an entrance test for admissions into Medical schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean Islands countries. This is an international-level exam and it is administered by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). The MCAT exam is conducted 25 times a year in 21 countries. Candidates can take this exam 3 times over the one-year period, and 4 times spread over the 2-year period. The candidate can take the exam 7 times in their lifetime.

Apart from testing the knowledge of scientific fundamentals necessary for completing Medical school, the MCAT also focuses on written analysis and problem-solving skills. The average score for the MCAT exam is usually around 500, and for each section, it is around 125. The registration fees for the MCAT exam differ according to the region a candidate is in. It can be anywhere between USD 300 to USD 400.

The MCAT exam is excruciatingly long with a length of almost 7.5 hours and candidates are advised to prepare really well since the MCAT has only a limited number of attempts. The candidates should prepare well before the MCAT so as to avoid the possibility of re-take. To prepare candidates must go through mock tests and develop a sitting habit.

MCAT 2023 Eligibility

It is important for applicants to go through the eligibility criteria defined by the organizing authorities before attempting the MCAT 2023. Any candidates interested in pursuing a career in Allopathic, Osteopathic, Podiatric, and veterinary can appear for the MCAT test.

The eligibility criteria to be fulfilled by the applicants for the exam are mentioned below.

  • International candidates must be pursuing or have completed MBBS to appear for MCAT.

Changing the Appointment (MCAT Exam Day)

In order to change the appointment for MCAT exam, the candidate must remember the following points.

  • An additional fee is required for this service.
  • One may change the test date and/ or centre before the deadline and if the space is available.
  • The availability for the same can be checked on the 'MCAT Registration system.
  • Re-scheduling can be done latest by the deadline of the silver zone.
  • Post the silver zone deadline, one must make an appointment if one re-schedules the exam.
  • The MCAT is an expensive exam, candidates are requested to leave with no chance of error.

MCAT 2023 Test Structure

MCAT assesses students based on their problem-solving skills, critical thinking, written analysis, and knowledge of scientific concepts and principles. The computer-based test consists of 221 multiple-choice questions. The total duration of the exam is 7.5 hours with breaks in between.

There are 4 sections - Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. 

Important Notes

The students who are appearing for the MCAT 2023 must keep the following important points in mind.

  • A calculator is not provided during the MCAT test. Only a periodic table is provided. 
  • The 15 questions out of 59 questions from Chemistry, Biology, and Physics section are standalone and have no relevance from the passage given in the question paper. The rest of the 44 questions from the Chemistry/ Physics section come from passages given in the exam, please note that in order to solve them a candidate must have outside knowledge as well, just the information in the passage will not be enough.

Revaluation of Exam

In case the candidate finds any discrepancy in the MCAT score, they can notify the 'MCAT Registration System' for the fault. AAMC will reply within 3 weeks with a positive or negative response.

Candidates can put up after 30 days of score release.

How to Void MCAT Score?

Candidates have the option to void the MCAT score.

Candidates are asked to accept or void the score, after the completion of the MCAT exam. To void the score, the candidate must choose the 'Void the MCAT' option.

In case a candidate has to leave the exam mid-way due to sickness or any other unfortunate situation, they must submit the 'Test Center Concern' to AAMC.

Note: An exam that is voided will add to the number of attempts.

MCAT 2023 Counselling

A very large number of Medical colleges consider MCAT scores for admissions. To know about the list of international and national colleges, check the official website. To know about any individual college, click on the college tab on the dashboard above.

Start by shortlisting the colleges then make a date sheet with their last date of application submission. Note that every college has a fee for application processing, so the applicants are advised not to waste their resources on the colleges that they are not interested in.

Send the application with the attached files to the application portal college. The college will do its own scrutiny, and reply back to the applicant within some time for a possible interview with alumni or faculty members. Then, the college will share with the candidates their Acceptance Letter via post or email.

Documents Required for MCAT 2023 Counselling

The MCAT counseling is done at the college level. The students must apply for their desired college separately. The process will require a number of documents such as the following.

MCAT 2023 Exam Day Instructions

There are certain instructions to be followed by the candidates on their MCAT exam day. These instructions are as follows.

  • Candidates must report to the test centre 30 minutes prior to the MCAT examinations. After that, the candidate will not be allowed to the test centre and no refund will be given.
  • Only those examinees who have the qualifying ID will be allowed to enter the MCAT test centre.
  • MCAT candidates must present a valid ID at the test centre.
  • Temporary IDs, paper IDs, IDs with extension stickers, or ID application receipts are accepted.
  • The first and last name on the ID must be exactly the same as on the MCAT registration. Any discrepancy related to this issue can be resolved through AAMC services.
  • They are provided with 10 minutes and 30 minutes break, but the candidate cannot leave the MCAT exam centre at any cost.

Document Specifications for MCAT 2023 Exam

  • The ID should be in English.
  • The ID should not have a past expiration date. 
  • The ID must be issued by the government.

MCAT 2023 Cancellation and Refunds

Candidates can get the refund only and only if they apply for cancellation of their MCAT exam date within the deadline of the Gold zone.

There is a provision for emergency refunds, it can only be made within the deadline of the Silver zone. The conditions given below are considered in an emergency situation.

  • The candidate is hospitalized.
  • An unexpected duty call to serve in health care due to a public catastrophe or disaster.
  • If a candidate has to go for 'Jury Duty'.
  • Death of an immediate family member.
  • An unexpected duty call to serve in the military.
  • The candidate is displaced due to a natural calamity.
