Preparing the TNEA 2023 Merit List

The total marks considered to rank students who appear for the TNEA exam is 200. Mathematics holds the maximum weightage of 100 marks, and the rest is shared by physics and chemistry (100 marks together).

According to the authority, the marks secured by candidates in the relevant subjects of the qualifying exam shall be considered by the boards. These marks shall be further equated with students who have answered the same exams in the qualifying examination of the state board of Tamil Nadu, thus normalizing the TNEA Rank list.

The university prepares a single merit list for all the candidates based on three important criteria:

  1. The marks secured by the candidates in mathematics, physics and chemistry in the qualifying exam
  2. The candidate's date of birth
  3. The category of the candidate

TNEA 2023 Rank List Normalisation Method

The normalisation process of the TNEA 2023 Rank list takes into consideration the marks from other boards, in relation to the highest marks in the Tamil Nadu State Board.

For example: if the highest marks in Tamil Nadu State Board in Chemistry is 100, and the highest in any other board is 90, the highest marks will be considered as 100. However, if the marks secured by another student is 60, where 90 is the highest, the marks required will be reduced to 66.66 by using the following formula: (100x60) / 90 = 66.66%

Once the normalisation process is complete, qualified students will be placed on the common merit list. If a candidate has qualified from CBSE, ICSE, or other national boards, National level marks will be taken into consideration for normalisation. This is the standard practice for the TNEA B.Arch rank list and other courses within the scope of the TNEA 2023 exam.

Preparing Inter-Se-Merit for TNEA Rank List 2023

The merit list of TNEA is prepared for the scale of 200 marks. If a candidate has secured the same marks as another on the common merit list, the inter-se-merit is considered to determine the order of priority. The following points shall apply:

  1. Marks secured in mathematics
  2. Marks secured in physics
  3. Marks secured in the fourth optional subject
  4. Candidates date of birth (Senior candidate will be preferred)
  5. Assigning a random number where the higher value is preferred.

TNEA Cutoff and Counselling 2023

The cutoff for TNEA 2023 is the minimum marks needed for admission to the participating institutions. The cutoff differs across the participating instiututions and also differs for the various programmes offered by each institution.

The TNEA counselling process extends upto four to five rounds, and only candidates who have obtained the required rank in the entrance test will be allowed to appear for the counselling process. Based on the overall rank and community rank of the candidate, the seat will be allotted, through online counselling only.
