The Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship is provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Scholarship scheme provides financial assistance worth ₹36,200 per year to a single girl child from a family pursuing post-graduation courses.

Students can apply for the single girl child scholarship scheme before the application deadline of 31 October, 2019 through the National Scholarship Portal. Girl students with a maximum age limit of 30 years are eligible to apply for the central government-sponsored financial scheme.

Over 3000 fresh scholarships are disbursed every academic year. Scholarship Renewal for the next academic year will be granted on the satisfactory performance of the scholar. The financial allowance shall be disbursed to each scholar from the date of joining. Any kind of additional grants will not be given for the medical and hostel charges.

Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

Target groups and general conditions of eligibility of the proposed scheme are given below:

  • The scholarship is applicable for a single girl child admitted to the first-year postgraduate degree of full-time course in any designated college or university.
  • Girl students aged 30 years and below are eligible to apply.
  • PG students of distance education mode are not encouraged to participate in the proposed scheme.
  • The participation of institutes with national importance comes under the scheme.
  • Eligible students of college/ institutions/ universities funded by state or central government can participate in the scholarship.
  • Candidates of colleges/ institutions or universities included in the UGC Act under sections 12(B) and 2(f) are eligible to participate.

Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship Rewards and Benefits:

Financial allowance for 2019-20 academic year for the Indira Gandhi scholarship are given below:

  1. A total number of 3000 fresh scholarships will be disbursed each year.
  2. Each scholar can avail ₹36,200 per year under the scholarship program.
  3. The proposed scholarship allowance shall be granted for two years of the full course duration.
  4. Any kind of additional grant is not payable in lieu of medical and hostel charges.
  5. The awardees can benefit from scholarships under any other schemes during the proposed scholarship tenure.
  6. Girl students will receive a tuition fee waiver to pursue PG course in institutions/ colleges or universities.

Note: The scholarship amount shall be credited directly to the beneficiaries' account on an annual basis through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) mode.

Application Process for Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship:

The applicants fulfilling the conditions of eligibility are advised to apply online on the National Scholarship Portal:

  • Click on New Registration in the National Scholarship Portal.
  • Read and agree to the terms and conditions and click on Continue.
  • Enter the scholarship details and personal details.
  • Enter the bank details such as bank name, IFSC, account number, etc.
  • Click on the Register button after giving Aadhar number/ Bank account number as identification details.
  • An OTP number will be generated once the mobile number gets verified.
  • Log in with the OTP number and fill the form.
  • Application ID and Password will be given for future reference.

Note: Candidates are requested to fill up the application form correctly. Changes are not permissible once the application is submitted. The central government-sponsored scheme shall not encourage multiple applications as it will lead to the cancellation of the application.

Application Procedure Guidelines:

  1. Once in a year, applications will be invited through the National Scholarship Portal, Government of India.
  2. The short notification shall be provided on the University Grants Commission portal.
  3. Only verified applications are considered for the scholarship awards.
  4. Incomplete applications are not allowed.
  5. An affidavit showing the status of the single girl child should be uploaded in the prescribed format.
  6. Refer to Annexure 1 of scholarship guidelines for the joining report uploading format.

Scholarship Renewal:

The renewal of the scholarship is based on the following factors:

  • Subject to the renewal receipt, scholarships will be renewed for the study in the next academic year.
  • The host would forfeit the scholarship in case a scholar fails to get promoted to the next class or academic level.
  • The scholarship will not be renewed if a student changes the course of study.
  • The financial assistance pattern through the Canara bank portal or UGC shall continue for the scholars of previous years.

Note: The proposed scheme shall be monitored and implemented by the University Grants Commission [UGC].

Indira Gandhi Scholarship Important Documents:

The University Grants Commission notifies that, for the scholarship disbursement Aadhar will be used as an identifier:

  1. Photograph of the applicant.
  2. Scanned copy of the Aadhar card.
  3. Mark sheet of the previous final examination (Self-attested copy).
  4. Current course fee receipt.
  5. An affidavit showing the status of the single girl child (In the prescribed format).
  6. Joining report as per the prescribed format.

Note 1: Joining report shall be duly filled along with the seal and signature of the verifying officer.

Note 2: Single girl child affidavit should be on stamp paper worth INR 50. It has to be duly filled along with the signature and seal of Gazetted officer/ First Class Magistrate or SDM (Tehsildar or above-ranked officers).

Scholarship Important Dates:

  • Last date of application: 31 October, 2019.
  • Defective verification date:15 November, 2019.
  • Institute verification date:15 November, 2019.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. It has been observed that from the 2016-17 financial year scholarship will be disbursed using Aadhar card as an identifier.
  2. The scholarship shall be disbursed from the date of joining the course.
  3. The scholarship amount will directly be credited to the beneficiary's account through the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) mode.
  4. The scholarship scheme shall be monitored, evaluated and implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  5. Applicant has to opt for ‘incentive’ in the type of scholarship option in order to apply.
  6. Selected students will only be entitled to scholarship amount, No medical expenses, hostel fee or HRA are allowed.
