What is the MAEF Scholarship?

The Maulana Azad Education Foundation awards the ‘Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship’ formerly known as Maulana Azad Scholarship to meritorious girls belonging to the minority communities such as Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. The MAEF was created by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India on the birth centenary celebrations of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) provides the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) for students belonging to the minority communities such as Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. The scholarship provides financial aid to students pursuing MPhil and Ph.D. degrees in India. It is implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India through UGC.

MAEF Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

The MAEF Scholarship is for the students belonging to minority communities such as Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. The other academic criteria to be fulfilled in order to apply for the scholarship are listed below:

  • The applicant should be a girl child belonging to the minority community.
  • She should be pursuing studies from Class 9- Class 12.
  • The candidate should have scored at least 50% marks  (or equivalent grade) in the last qualifying examination.
  • The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed INR 2,00,000 from all sources.

Maulana Azad National Fellowship

  • The applicant should belong to the minority community.
  • She should have cleared CBSE-NET/ CSIR-NET/ UGC-NET/ NTC examination to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  • The candidate should be registered for a full-time MPhil/Ph.D. course from a recognized university/ institution in India.
  • Transgender students are also eligible to apply for this scholarship.
  • The candidate should have completed the postgraduate degree with a minimum of 55% marks.
  • The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed INR 6,00,000 from all sources.

MAEF Scholarship Rewards and Benefits:

The MAEF scholarship provides financial assistance to the students in the form of admission fees, course fees, and maintenance fees. The scholarship amount is directly credited to the students’ bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The other scholarship benefits offered by the MAEF scholarship  are listed below:

  • Students studying in Class 9 and Class 10 get a scholarship amount of INR 5000 per annum.
  • Students studying in Class 11 and Class 12 get a scholarship amount of INR 6000 per annum.

Maulana Azad National Fellowship

  • Fellowship amount of INR 25,000 per month is given to the students pursuing a Junior Research Fellowship for the duration of 2 years and INR 28,000 per month is given to the students pursuing Senior Research Fellowship for the rest of the tenure.
  • The candidates pursuing Humanities, Social Sciences, and Commerce degree get a contingency amount of INR 10,000 per annum for the initial 2 years and INR 20,500 per annum for the remaining 3 years.
  • The candidates pursuing Science get a contingency amount of INR 12,000 per annum for the initial 2 years and INR 25,000 per annum for the remaining 3 years.
  • The physically and visually challenged applicants also get an Escorts/ Readers Assistance of INR 2000 per month.

MAEF Scholarship Application Process:

The application process for the MAEF Scholarship is done online through the respective scholarship portal. The application procedure is explained in detail below:

The application process for the Begum Hazrat Mahal scholarship is online through the Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF) scholarship portal. The step-by-step application process is explained below:

  1. First-time applicants should register themselves on the Maulana Azad Education Foundation online website.
  2. She should click on the ‘Student Registration’ tab on the homepage.
  3. The candidate should enter personal details such as full name, parents’ name, domicile, mobile number, address, etc in the registration form.
  4. Next, the applicant should ‘Submit’ the registration form to check for correctness.
  5. After the successful submission of the registration form, the students will receive a link to download the school verification form.
  6. The applicant should download the school verification form and get it verified by the principal of the respective school/ institution. This form should be uploaded with the scholarship application form.
  7. Now, the applicant should log in to the MAEF website by entering the registered mobile number and date of birth.
  8. The candidate should fill the scholarship application form online with bank details, academic details, parents’ occupation, and income details.
  9. All the supporting documents should be uploaded along with a scanned copy of the school verification form.
  10. The completed application form should be submitted for further processing.

Maulana Azad National Fellowship Application Process:

The application for the fellowship is through the official website of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The stepwise application process is explained below:

  • Interested candiates should visit the UGC official website.
  • On the Scholarships/ Fellowships section, the student should click on the ‘View All’ button to see a list of all scholarships and fellowships offered by UGC.
  • Under the Fellowships category, the applicant should click on the ‘Apply Now’ button of the Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students.
  • The candidate should read all the instructions carefully and click on ‘Proceed for Registration’.
  • She should fill in all the details to complete the registration process. A registration ID is generated in the end which should be used to download the application form after submission.
  • Now the applicant should fill the application form with information such as personal details, academic details, institute details, research work details, and also the supervisor and current employment details.
  • The candidates should now review the filled in application and read the declaration section carefully before proceeding to submit the application.

MAEF Scholarship Documents Required:

The MAEF Scholarship application form should be submitted online along with all the supporting documents attached. The documents required for the scholarship application are listed below:

  1. Passport size photograph
  2. Scanned copy of school verification form attested by the respective school principal
  3. Attested mark sheet of the last qualifying examination
  4. Parents’ income certificate
  5. Self-attested minority community certificate of the applicant
  6. Self-attested copy of first page of bank passbook
  7. Copy of Aadhar card

Documents Required for the Maulana Azad National Fellowship:

  • Passport size color photograph
  • Domicile certificate
  • Attested Minority community certificate
  • Handicap certificate, if applicable
  • NET/ JRF award letter or Mark sheet if the award letter is not yet received

The applicants can track the status of the scholarship application in the respective MAEF Scholarship Application Portal. The details required for the scholarship status check for the different schemes under the MAEF scholarship are given below:

Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Status Check:

The candidate can check the status of the application on the MAEF scholarship portal. The details to be entered to check the application status are:

  • Category of scholarship
  • Identification details such as Registration number/ Aadhar number/ Bank account number.
  • Date of birth

Maulana Azad National Fellowship Status Check:

The candidate can check the status of the application on the UGC website. The details to be entered to check the application status are:

  • Candidate registration ID
  • Date of birth
  • Year of Scholarship applied
  • Registered Email ID

MAEF Scholarship Selection Process:

The selection criteria for the different schemes under the MAEF Scholarship are given below:

Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship Selection Process:

  • The candidates are selected based on the annual family income of the family.
  • The applicants are also shortlisted based on their academic performance.
  • There is a fixed number of scholarships for each State/ Union Territory which is based on the minority population of the particular State/ UT.
  • The students with the least family income are preferred for the scholarship over other candidates.
  • The scholarship amount is disbursed to the scholars through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Maulana Azad National Fellowship Selection Process:

The UGC follows certain procedures while selecting the recipients of the Maulana Azad fellowship. The selection criteria are for the scholarship is explained in detail below:

  1. The application forms for the fellowship are verified by the UGC to comply with the eligibility conditions as per the guidelines.
  2. An expert committee is set up which goes through the submitted applications and selects a final list of applicants which is then posted on the UGC website. The decision of the selection committee is final.
  3. The selected candidates are required to join the fellowship on the 1st of April of the respective selection year.
