Mumbai University was established in pre-independent India in the year 1857 and was formerly known as the University of Bombay. It was the first State University of the country and is the oldest university in Maharashtra. Currently, Mumbai University has 2 main campuses, Kalina/ Vidyanagari [243 acres] and Fort [14 acres], and three sub-campuses or centers at Ratnagiri [20 acres], Thane [6.50 acres], and Kalyan [6.26 acres].

Mumbai University has approximately 749 affiliated colleges, with 60 University departments and institutes. Today, it has become one of the leading institutes in the country and has many industries and international collaborations to its name; while also running multiple professional courses.

The first degrees that were awarded by Mumbai University were the Bachelor of Arts and Licentiate in Medicine. Today, it has courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate levels. It also offers diploma courses across disciplines. The first department to be established as the School of Sociology and Civics & Politics.

Mumbai University admission has increased exponentially. In the past few years, the institute has seen a 104% increase in undergraduate students, a 112% increase in post-graduate students, and a 147% increase in distance-education students. Mumbai University courses are approved by UGC and twelve departments are recognized under various national-level programs, like SAP, CAS, DRS, DSA, COSIST, and FIST. It is also been accreditated as Grade 'A' by NAAC. 

The faculty members are experts in their respective fields, and more than 80 teachers are on various professional bodies. Moreover, they have won over 18 national and international awards, in the past 5 years.

Mumbai University IDOL, which is the Institute of Distance and Open Learning, started in 1993, for students who are away from the University in space and time. It has undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma courses in the fields of science, commerce, and arts.

The facilities provided by Mumbai University are listed below:

  • The Mumbai University has a virtual classroom, which was a program that was started by the University Grant Commission [UGC], as University Video Lecture Course [UVLC].
  • University of Mumbai, Mumbai has a Central Computing Facility that was established in 1990; and has the following hardware and software equipment: IBM Netfinity, Servers, Printers-Dot Matrix, Laser, Line Printers, Line Matrix with graphics capability, ICR scanners, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Novell Netware.
  • It also provides the following services: Computerised Examination System, Convocation System, Admissions, and Computerization of Accounts Section.
  • Mumbai University library opened in the year 1880 and it then also hosted the post-graduate lecture.
  • In 1976, another library was opened in Vidyanagari, named Jawaharlal Nehru Library, and has approximately 870,000 books, periodicals, and other resources.

Diversity is quite rich considering that is located in Mumbai which is a melting pot of diferent cultures. No restrictions on alcohol or party

The library at University of Mumbai was established in 1857. In August, 1864, Premchand Roychand, a merchant prince of Bombay, offered to the University a donation of Rs. 2,00,000 

Individual collections

People have donated their entire collections to the University.

1. A.K. Priolkar Collection : Sanskrit, Marathi, English and Portuguese books.
2. Patkar Collection - Law books.
3. M.M.P.Y.Kane Collection - Books on Law, Sanskrit. 
4. Dr. B. Ambedkar Collection - Books, Newspapers, letters. 
5. Collection of material on Mumbai (Bombay)-Special collect

Special collections

1. Diaries, Personal Records of old Bombay families - Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy the   first Baronet ranging from 1826-1876 and Serene Maneckjee Cursetjee (1857-1939).

2.Newspaper clippings mostly in Marathi from Ashana Irabatti collection.

3.Newspaper clippings, from Baburao Patel Collection - 750 files on social and political conditions in the 1950's and 1960's.

4.Lokhitawadi Collection - 12,000 books and back volumes of journals in Marathi,  English, Hindi.

5. Art collections: Books on art Presented by Ms.P.F. Pavari.

6 . Letters - 342 letters of lokhitawadi presented by Dr. Indumati Parikh.

7. Manuscripts- 7500 Sanskrit manuscripts, 1376 Persian, Urdu and Arabic manuscripts  (Fyzee,Khatkhate, Hamadani Collections).
