Placements and Internships

3.5

I did an internship in my hometown Kolkata, at a company called Script Productions, where I was part of the organising team who had an event called Calcutta Youth Meet, a fest similar to the TTIS youth fests that involved a lot of students from all across Bengal . Being a student company, there was no stipend involved.

Since my course in college was headlined by the media department, we mostly had placements from news agencies such as The Hindu, Deccan Herald, etc and some television networks such as Republic, etc . In addition to this companies like Samsung had offers for students in the advertising department.

The Alumni network has a program every year where they donate so that teenagers from impoverished families could pursue their dreams with full vigour, they also have regular meetings.

Around 30% of the people in my batch got placed from the Humanities division, according to my knowledge. This is due to the fact that a majority of students wanted to look for opportunities of their own or proceed with higher studies .

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

3.5

There is only 1 hostel for men, and 3 for women. The hostel fees are around 10000 per month. Naturally the lane adjacent to the univeristy is filled with other kinds of accomodation, predominantly PGs. The food in a majority of them is pretty abysmal, but conditions have improved in some by the time I reached my final year. Food is provided by 5 different canteens across the main campus, and these are mostly affordable and the meals sumptuous.

There is a main library which is termed as the knowledge centre, which is quite spread out( there are 3 floors and numerous sections, even a cyber zone ). Classrooms are well-maintained and Wi-Fi has low speed. There are network issues due to signal jammers present throughout the campus.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

The course I opted for was a triple major in three respective subjects - Journalism, Psychology and English so that later I could pursue my Masters' in whichever direction suited my goals best. For entrance there was an interview in Kolkata where they asked me my interest towards the particular subjects concerned, and why I opted for Humanities when I was previously a Science student . They also wanted to know about whether I'd be comfortable migrating , and inquired me about my discplinary issues as well. There was no entrance examination, but the eligibility criteria required 70% in board exams of the 12th grade.

Academics and Faculty

3

There is plenty effort that goes into the college, however I would say that a lot of it sometimes gets wasted. The teachers are all knowledgable in their respective fields, yet some of them fail to develop a bond with the students and adopt a dictatorial regime so as to make the latter bend their will. Punishments are metted out when a student fails to turn the mobile phones off at times, and a issue which becomes a curse for various students is attendance. Christ Univeristy has a rule which states that only students with attendance percentage above 85 are qualified to move forward for the next semester; if this clause fails, a student has to sit in the library for the hours required to clear the percentage, as the exams begin. Also there is constant pressure of assigments(called CIAs) which tend to make passionate students lose focus at times. Overall, even though the knowledge metted out is substantial, some are left happy and committed to their ideals, and some grumpy and unsure of their lives.

Fees and Scholarships

3.5

Per year the course fee was around 1 lac and 20 thousand . Each semester had a fee of 60000 for students who were from other states .

There were students from primarily African nations and some European countries who were part of the many thousand students of the university.

Christ University has an association with the South Indian Bank (the main campus has a bank office ) because of which transactions can be done easily with the help of a smart card, which acts as a debit card as well as the identity card of the student to get attendance for events and so on.

Clubs and Associations

3.5

The university prohibits the existence of a student union. Because of which there exists a student council, the body which essentially work alongside teachers to aid in their various activities. There is a student organisation known as CSA, who are involved in street play performances, recycling and so on, in order to help the people in need. Aside from this there are various theatre clubs (AD-HOC, ZEELUS ,etc) and a choir group as well.

Life in college is comfortable. With the exception of some classrooms that resemble closets, it can be quite fun during events like Media Meet, Silhouettes(a Psychology event), Jabberwocky , etc.

Entrance Exams & Admissions : You need to be a 12th standard pass to be eligible for this course, and your grades need to be above a minimum of 60% (at least that was the cut off in 2012). There is no test involved, but there is an interview conducted by the faculty of your potential course. The interview is fairly typical and centers around gauging your personality, though there are a couple, of course, related questions.
