Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Hyderabad Infrastructure Details

Hostels:

IIT Hyderabad has a set of three hostels, Old Boys' Hostel,Girls Hostel and the New Boys' Hostel and there are two Messes' adjacent to these hostels. Hostel Life at IITH is filled with fun only - and a frisk of study (when exams are on). Two students share a single room, which has enough space for 2 beds, 2 study tables and chairs, and 2 Godrej almirahs. The hostels are brand new - renovated from the old buildings of the Ordnance Factory to the present state and the new Boys' Hostel and Girls Hostel have been recently constructed. All the hostels have a TV room - used quite a lot, especially in the evenings. Students go crazy over football and cricket (especially IPL) matches, creating a stadium like environment with supporters of various teams. People are always on high-adrenaline here. A Table-Tennis room is also one of the most frenzied rooms of the hostel. Apart from this, there is also a game room where students usually are seen playing carrom, chess and other indoor games. We also have a computer room. that has 5 well configured computers which people can use for whatever the purpose. Then there is a reading room - it is the only place that actually has the study "ambience" - quiet, well lit environment. This is also the place where all the newspapers are also kept daily for student use. There is also the most famous Cafeteria - a store located near the old Dining Hall where one can buy cold drinks, chips, and other snacks. There is also a stationery store beside the student activities coordinator (SAC) room. The SAC room is where students can go if they need to sort out any personal or other issues or just talking about any ideas for activities. One also enjoys outdoor sports in a different barbaric manner...we play football, volleyball and cricket with vigor on fields we have in the hostel premises ,including the girls hostel. It's great playing football at whatever the time( it is lit by some vapor lamps) at the field which we like to call - New Trafford. The girls' hostel is equally well equipped with all these facilities. And last but not least the Birthdays....the celebration starts on midnight with cake (usually smashed on the birthday boy's/girl's face), soft drinks and of course the celebrations! Celebrating birthdays in the hostels' has become a tradition now and everyone looks forward to it. So, to sum it up in short, that's Hostel Life... What we call "Home Sweet Home'!

Student Gymkhana:

Student Gymkhana is a student body which aims to bring the students together for their mutual all-round development. All the students of IIT Hyderabad are members of the Student Gymkhana and they are bounded by the Student Gymkhana Constitution and functions through its Executive Council. These members manage all the activities in their respective areas with the President coordinating them all. They are selected through the general elections which are held at the end of each academic year. Each area has its own Council which helps the Secretaries in conducting various activities throughout the year. Student Gymkhana is a body created to help the students to develop themselves and excel in any field that they wish to. It is a body constituted to foster a sense of unity among the students. It oversees all the aspects of the students' life during their stay at IIT Hyderabad and is constantly trying to improve their life here. It also acts as a link between the administration and the students. It is a body whose aim is to make the students responsible and better citizens of the world.
Dining Facilities:
We have excellent dining facilities at IITH. Our dining facility caters to all students of IITH. It is run by a private caterer. The Dining Hall is located in next to the Boys' Hostel and can accommodate about 130 students at one time. The food for the girls' hostel gets delivered everyday to them by the staff of the Dining Hall. The dining facility at IITH is a hygienic place where all the healthy practices are followed. The quality of the food served is also good. The students are served breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner .The menu of all the days of the week is decided by a Dining Hall committee consisting of students and the Student Activities Coordinator. At IITH, we recognize the importance of a balanced diet and thus the menu is decided in such a way that all students get all the necessary nutrients important for good health while still making sure that the food appeals to the stomach!

In addition to the Dining Hall at the hostel, there is a small canteen at the institute and also at the Dining Hall called "little place". The canteens provides light food and beverage items such as cold drinks, hot drinks, biscuits, chips, chocolates etc. to students, staff and faculty of the institute. So, to sum it up, the dining facility at IITH satisfies everybody and leaves nobody hungry.

Medical Services:

IIT Hyderabad located in the premises of Ordnance Factory Estate, Yeddumailaram, and is serviced by a 50 bedded Ordnance Factory Hospital (OFH). It provides secondary level health care in five specialties, like General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesiology and Pathology. Apart from the above, some Honorary Specialists are visiting the Hospital on certain days in a week in the following specialties: Pediatrics, ENT, Opthomology, Dentistry, Untra-Sonalogy, and Cardiology. Radiology and other imaging investigations, Untra-Sonography Facility and Upper-Gastro Intestinal Endoscope facilities are available in the Ordnance Factory Hospital. The clinical laboratory is equipped with Semi-Automatic Blood Analyzer capable of doing all bio-chemical investigations and certain immunology investigations. Facilities to perform Bacteriologic Investigations, like culture and sensitivity tests, are also available. The Ordnance Factory Hospital provides round the clock emergency care facility with one Medical Officer physically present in the Hospital. The patients who require territory health care are being referred to hospitals in Hyderabad city, which are within one hour range, the closest one being the BHEL hospital, about 45 minutes from campus.

The OFH is situated opposite the Market area, just a few minutes walk from the Institute. To be eligible for treatment at the OFH, students and staff from IIT have to register at the Hospital and then will receive their Medical Booklet. This process just takes a few minutes. All one needs is a proof of Identity (usually ones' IIT Identity Card) provided by the Institute. If anybody wants to visit the hospital for any kind of treatment, they have to carry their Medical Booklet and follow the timings of the Hospital prepared for Out Patients. The Out-Patient Department (OPD) timings are 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the OPD is available only in the morning. The Medical booklet helps any student/staff from IIT Hyderabad to have access to free Medical tests and treatment recommended by any doctor of the OFH.

On the premises of Ordnance Factory you find the following: Stationery shop, General store, Phone Recharge shop, Banks (Andhra Bank, State Bank of Hyderabad), BSNL Office, Cycle Repair shop, Barber shop, Landry shop, Ladies Beauty Parlor and an ODF Hospital.
