Government College of Technology, Coimbatore was founded in 1945 as Arthur Hope College of Technology named after Arthur Hope by G. D. Naidu. In June 1950, the college moved to its current location in Thadagam Road, Coimbatore. In 1951, the college was renamed as Government College of Technology (GCT). The college was initially affiliated to the University of Madras, later to the Bharathiar University and since the academic year 2001-2002 to Anna University. In 1981, the college was granted autonomy for its civil and mechanical engineering postgraduate programs. Subsequently, in 1987, full autonomy for all programs was granted. The institute offers undergraduate courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and postgraduate courses award the master of Engineering degree. Undergraduate students are admitted based on competitive student rankings in the higher secondary examination.
The vision of the college is to emerge as a centre of excellence and eminence by imparting futuristic technical education in keeping with global standards, making the students technologically competent and ethically strong so that they can readily contribute to the rapid advancement of the society and mankind. For undergraduate courses:
Applications for all the UG courses are done online. The admissions are done on the basis of government college of technology Coimbatore cut off list and GCT ac results. Admission to all undergraduate courses is carried out through the single window system of Anna University. Students can choose the courses based upon the state-wise rank calculated by their marks in Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.
For Post Graduate Programs:
The Government of Tamil Nadu has nominated Anna University, Chennai-25 as its nodal agency for conducting Tamil Nadu Common Admissions through the single window Counselling for M.Tech. GCT Results are published done on the basis of merit. Admission to all postgraduate courses is carried out through the single window system of Anna University. Gate Scores are valid for candidates who have written the TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) for M.E. degree programs.
TANCET/ GATE are prerequisite for admissions to GCT for PG Courses.

GCT college Coimbatore facilities include a hostel for all its students.
There are nine hostel blocks for the students. Out of these nine blocks, two are reserved for women and can accommodate a total of 1500 students. The hostels are named after rivers namely Palar, Ponnai, Kaveri, Bhavani, Vaigai, Thamirabharani, Vellaru, Amaravathi and Kothai.

Daily the college starts at 9 am and ends at 4:50 pm. The staffs are PhD holders and well experienced. The overall study atmosphere is very good.
There are many clubs in the college like a Rotract club, green club, literary and debating society, automobile society, photography etc are the various clubs in the college. The Tech fest, Cultural fest and Sports day are celebrated every year.
