Government College of Technology, Coimbatore was founded in 1945 as Arthur Hope College of Technology named after Arthur Hope by G. D. Naidu. In June 1950, the college moved to its current location in Thadagam Road, Coimbatore. In 1951, the college was renamed as Government College of Technology (GCT). The college was initially affiliated to the University of Madras, later to the Bharathiar University and since the academic year 2001-2002 to Anna University. In 1981, the college was granted autonomy for its civil and mechanical engineering postgraduate programs. Subsequently, in 1987, full autonomy for all programs was granted.

Government College of Technology offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a number of specializations within the field of engineering. The college accepts 80-120 students in each field of undergraduate study and 18-20 students in each postgraduate course. B. Tech/ B. E courses span over 4 years while M.E/ M.S courses are offered over a course of 2 years.
GCT Admissions into all undergraduate courses is through the TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) under Anna University. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 10+2 from a recognized board having taken Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as optional subjects. Although there is no entrance examination, candidates must apply online in order for their TNEA score to be calculated. Ranks are given purely on the basis of merit at the state level. Candidates can apply online at the Anna University Website. A fee of Rs 500 for general applicants and Rs 250 for applicants eligible under the reservation category will be levied in order for the application to be considered. The payment must be made by Demand Draft by June 3.

Postgraduate admissions are through the Anna University Single Window System. Candidates must possess a degree in a relevant field, obtained by way of full-time study, in the 10+2+3 format of education. Eligible candidates must appear for TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test). Merit in this test will determine admission. Candidates who have cleared GATE examinations do not need to sit for TANCET. The applications for the test are filled online at official website, however, the test itself is taken offline at an allocated center. Counseling for postgraduate courses is at the state level. Candidates can apply for TANCET online through the Anna University website. A fee of INR 500 for general applicants and INR 250 for applicants eligible under the reservation category will be levied in order for the application to be considered.

Candidate must have passed the 12th from the recognized institute to get admission in this college. No separate entrance exam is conducted. Admission is done on merit basis. The cutoff mark varies every year and it will be displayed on the official website.
1. Students from Tamilnadu residential and have to apply and attend Anna University Chennai, counseling. 2. No entrance examination required. 3. Have to get 193.50 cut off in 12th standard.
Cut off should be feasible around 180, my cut off was 195.75 at the time when I have completed my HSC.
