Question 1. A person crosses a 600 m long street in 5 minutes. What is his speed in km per hour?

1. 3.6
2. 7.2
3. 8.4
4. 10

Ans. Option B

Speed =600/5 x 60 m/sec.

 = 2 m/sec.

Converting m/sec to km/hr (see essential formulas section)

=2 x18/5km/hr

= 7.2 km/hr

Question 2. If a person walks at 14 km/hr instead of 10 km/hr, he would have walked 20 km more. The actual Distance travelled by him is:

1. 50 km
2. 56 km
3. 70 km
4. 80 km

Ans. Option A

Let the actual Distance travelled be x km.

Then, x = x + 20

=X/10 X+20/14

= 14x = 10x + 200

= 4x = 200

= x = 50 km.

Question 3. A train can travel 50% faster than a car. Both start from point A and reach point B 75 km away from A simultaneously. On the way, however, the train lost about 12.5 minutes while stopping at the stations. The speed of the car is:

1. 100 kmph
2. 110 kmph
3. 120 kmph
4. 130 kmph

Ans. Option C

Let time be t.

Suppose the car is going at speed x,

Train speed will be x+(x/2) = 3x/2 = 1

Speed of Train(dist/time) = 75/(t-12.5) = 2

1 =2.

3x/2 = 75/t =3

Speed of car = 75/t.

x = 75/t = 4.

substitute 4 in 3.

By solving, you get;

time of car(t) = 37.5(in min)

By converting into hr.

t = 0.625 hr.

Speed of car = 75/0.625.

Ans: 120 kmph

Question 4. In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 200 km/hr, and the flight time increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:

1. 1 hour
2. 2 hours
3. 3 hours
4. 4 hours

Ans. Option A

See, we know D = ST.

Now,

d = 600 km.

Let,

Old speed = x km/hr <- taken time by T hr.

Original speed = (x-200)Km/hr <- taken time 3T/2.

(3T/2= T + extra 30 mins )=(1+30/60)T).

So,

600 = xT & 600 = (x-200)3T/2 = (3xT/2) - 300T

Now 300T = 900 - 600.

Finally, T = 1hr.

Question 5. A man completes a journey in 10 hours. He travels the first half of the journey at the rate of 21 km/hr and the second half at the rate of 24 km/hr. Find the total journey in km.

1. 220 km
2. 224 km
3. 230 km
4. 234 km

Ans. Option B

=X/21 + X/24 = 10,

=15X/168 = 10,

=X = 112,

=2X = 224.

Question 6. A man on tour travels 160 km at 64 km/hr and 160 km at 80 km/hr. The average speed for the first 320 km of the tour is:

1. 35.55 km/hr
2. 36 km/hr
3. 71.11 km/hr
4. 71 km/hr

Ans. Option C

Total distançe = 160+160=320

Total time = 160/64+160/80 = 4.5 = 9/2.

Av speed = TD/TT.

= 320/9/2.

= 71.11km/h.

Question 7. In covering a distance of 30 km, Abhay takes 2 hours more than Sameer. If Abhay doubles his speed, he will take 1 hour less than Sameer. Abhay's speed is:

1. Five kmph
2. 6 km
3. 6.25 km
4. 7.5 km

Ans.  Option A

=Take the ratio of the speed of Abhay: 1:2

=Then, we get the time ratio for the inverse time, so it is 2:1.

=The Gap is 1 unit, which is given as the sum of 3 hours.

=So 2=6 hours and 1= 3 hours.

=So we get the ans by applying a formula that is S= D/T

=S= 30/6, which is equal to 5.

Question 8. Robert is travelling on his cycle and has calculated to reach point A at 2 P.M. If he travels at 10 mph, he will reach there at 12 noon if he travels at 15 mph. At what speed must he travel to reach A at 1 P.M.?

1. 8 kmph
2. 11 kmph
3. 12 kmph
4. 14 kmph

Ans. Option C

Case1: speed = 10kmph.

Ce2: speed = 15kmph.

Given d/10-d/15 = 2,

d=60,

case1 time=60/10, time=6,

case2 time=60/15, time=4,

so, at noon, time is 4, and at 2 pm, it is 6

Moreover, 1 pm is between them so that it will be 5.

And 60/5=12.

Question 9. It takes eight hours for a 600 km journey if 120 km is done by train and the rest by car. It takes 20 minutes more if 200 km is done by train and the rest by car. The ratio of the speed of the train to that of the cars is:

1. 2 : 3
2. 3: 2
3. 3: 4
4. 4 : 3

Ans. Option C

We got that,

Eq 1: 1/x+4/y=1/15 =1/x=1/15-4/y.

Eq 2: 1/x+2/y=1/24 =1/x=1/24-2/y.

Now equate the 1/x values.

i.e 1/15-4/y = 1/24-2/y =2/y = 1/15-1/24.

=So you get y = 80.

=By submitting y in the eq 1: 1/x+4/80=1/15 and you get x =60.

=X : Y = 60:80 =3:4.

Question 10. A farmer travelled a distance of 61 km in 9 hours. He travelled partly on foot at the rate of 4 km/hr and partly on bicycle at the rate of 9 km/hr. The Distance travelled on foot is:

14 km

15 km

16 km

17 km

Ans. Option C

Farmer travels - 4 km/hr.

Speed = 4km/hr and Time = 4 hours.

Well, in 1 hour, he travels 1 Km, then in 4 hours, he will travel 4km.

So, Distance = Speed * Time.

= 4km/hr * 4hr.

= 16km (HR gets cancelled).
