Shivaji College operates under the Government of Delhi's trusteeship. The Union Minister for Agriculture and a renowned social activist and farmer-leader, Hon'ble Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh, founded it in 1961. In the largely rural region of Matiala, his vision was to provide higher education for boys and girls. The Delhi government took possession of the trusteeship of Shivaji College and moved it to Karampura in 1967. In 1976, Shivaji College was further moved to the present campus in Raja Garden.
Even though the college is surrounded by a busy city, the campus is covered with lush greenery and a peaceful environment. The campus is a green zone and the college undertakes so many measures and practices on the campus like bans on plastic, smoking, and entry of vehicles.
The college conducts semester end examinations for both even and odd semesters. The college conducts examinations twice a year. In the months of November-December, the test for all the odd semesters is carried out and in May-June, the examination for all the even semesters is carried out. The outcome of the Odd Semester Examination is normally announced every year in January, while the outcome of the Odd Semester Examination is announced in July-August.
