Government Engineering College, Barton Hill Facilities

Library

Each of our department has its own internal departmental technical library of more than 10,000 books and periodicals. It would cater the need of the students and faculty of each department.

In addition to it we have the College Technical Library. With a large collection of books, periodicals and reports, the library serves the needs of the staff and students of this College as a whole. The library is kept open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all working days.

The College Library consists of:

5. Book bank for students of Scheduled Caste/Tribe
6. Book bank for financially backward students
7. Reading room
8. Reprographic section
9. 100 seats with individual tables are provided in the reading room and current periodical’s room for the convenience of the students.

Lending section :50,000

Reference section :20,000

Book bank :11,900

Back volumes : 10,000

Current periodicals : 50

Books will be issued from the book bank to all SC/ST students and also to OBC students, whose parents’ annual income does not exceed Rs. 40,000/-.

Campus

The campus, situated centrally in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, is less than a kilometre from Palayam, and is located beside the Government Law College, Trivandrum.The college architecture is reminiscent of the erstwhile kingdom of Travancore. Hostel Facility is been provides for ladies. The campus area is about 6 acres.

Connectivity

Three 100 MBPS broadband connect the campus to the web.10 Gbit/s optical fibre network connects the entire campus.The college hosts a terminal of the EDUSAT educational communications satellite.

Student activities

The democratically elected college union spearheads academic, cultural and sports activities of the students in the campus. Aagneya the inter collegiate Techno-cultural festival of the college, started in 2008 is a crowd puller with increasing participation each year. The college arts festival stands out in respect of the number of participants it succeeds to attract and the yearly college magazine showcases the creative abilities of the students. Apart from the college union, all the departments have a students association which organizes academic events pertaining to their branch.

There is a student chapter of the IEEE in the college, which organizes technical seminars and related activities. The college has a team of students working to promote the use of free software among academia. They, along with the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE), have released a custom GNU/Linuxdistribution named FreeElectron, which provides (along with an operating system) software tools required in the ECE curriculum.

Thie college is a member of the Technology Incubation Centre of the Government of Kerala, which conducts Entrepreneurship Development Programmes and assists the students in starting their own enterprises.

The college has clubs and forums for promoting student interaction which includes a quiz club and a unit of the National Service Scheme(NSS). The quiz team has represented the college in and outside the state.

The Physical Education Department students can use the facilities of the Department of Physical Education, University of Kerala and their stadium which isa kilometer from the campus. Arrangements have been made to practice athletics, football, volleyball and weight training equipments there. Students can also practice basketball and handball have at the Central stadium and ball badminton, shuttle badminton and table tennis at Jimmy George stadium, which is about 2 kilometers away from the campus. Meanwhile, the construction of 2 badminton courts is progressing on the campus.

The basketball, football and cricket teams of the college have taken part in numerous competitions across the state and in inter-collegiate events organised by the university and won prizes.

  • I was a day scholar during study. There is only one hostel, that's for girls.
  • Labs all are well equipped with lab instruments. WiFi is of 5Mbps and covers the whole campus.

Two hotels are available for girls. Ladies hostels are situated inside of the campus. Hostel fee is about 1500 per month. Gecb also offers post graduation programs in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Our college is blessed with a clean and hygienic canteen offers delicious food. especially chicken biryani for just 55 rupees per plate. And also provides meals for just 35 rupees. Quality of classrooms is satisfactory. And each lecture hall has projectors. Labs like Mechanical lab, Electrical lab, electronics lab, communication lab, material testing lab are good. The college has a large library with lots of reference books etc. College offers high-speed free WiFi of 100 MB/s. The main building has two lists. GECB has got two NBA accreditation. And offers Honour's degree in Btech from the 2018 batch.

2 ladies hostels are there within the campus. A men's hostel is being setup off campus. A lot of hostels and PG facilities are available in the vicinity of the college and the average cost will be around INR 4000 per month.

There is a Ladies hostel next to the college campus. The hostel takes fee only for the mess which is also affordable. The food in the college is good. Quality of the classrooms is good. We have got an excellent library and free Wi-Fi also. The infrastructure quality is good, but labs do need improvement.

Labs have a short capacity, maybe because the college is relatively new, only Ladies hostel is available.
