About The Madras Sanskrit College, Chennai
The Madras Sanskrit College & S.S.V.Patasala was founded in February 1906, by one of the most illustrious personalities and an eminent jurist late Honourable V.Krishnaswami Iyer, Former Judge of Madras High Court and Member of the Executive Council of Government of Madras. Grown rapidly since its inception, the college has completed hundred years of service to the society particularly in the field of Sanskrit and became successful in restoring and rejuvenating the indigenous tradition and culture.
The college is affiliated to the University of Madras and recognized by the Collegiate Education, Governmentt of Tamil Nadu under Grant-in-Aid. The college has been partly aided by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Govt. of India, New Delhi, under the Adarsha Mahavidyalaya Scheme from the year 1977.
The College offers the ‘Sanskrit Siromani’ course (10+2+3+2 Pattern) of the Madras University which is recognised as Post Graduate Degree by the University of Madras. The students are trained in Traditional Sastras namely Mimamsa, Advaita Vedanta, Sahitya, Vyakarana, Jyotisha and Nyaya through traditional way of teaching. English, Hindi & Computer Science are prescribed for the course upto graduate level to inculcate communication skills and to enhance job opportunities.
The students of the college are paid a monthly stipend of Rs. 700/- Rs. 800/- Rs. 1000/- in Prak-Siromani, Siromani Madhyama and Siromani Final respectively
The College provides free education and also hostel facility for deserving students and no fee is charged for the students.
Apart from these regular programmes two part-time programmes (i.e) Certificate Course in Sanskrit and Diploma Course in Sanskrit of Madras University are conducted for the benefit of the general public who are interested in learning Sanskrit.
