Overview
Panchmura Mahavidyalaya, established in 1965, is the first rural degree college and the third undergraduate college in Bankura. Named after Panchmura, a region famous for its terracotta crafts, the college is a symbol of the local community’s long-held aspiration to provide higher education to marginal farmers, land laborers, and the underprivileged. The vision of local educationists such as Dr. Ratnakar Mandal, Shri M. K. Mukherjee (founding President of the Governing Body), Shri C. B. Sannigrahi, and Shri S. Banerjee (the first Principal) was realized under the leadership of Dr. Pasupati Mandal, the then MP. Generous donations of land from the families of Joypur and Kulbani villages made the establishment of the college possible. The initial infrastructure was constructed with the collective efforts and contributions of local people, many of whom were farmers.
The college’s journey began on 20th August 1965 in the premises of Panchmura High School, offering three-year General Degree Courses and University Entrance courses in Arts. In 1968, the college moved to its own campus in newly-constructed buildings.
Starting with limited resources, the college has gradually expanded its infrastructure and offerings, now providing contemporary undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science. Due to its relevant programs, dedicated faculty, solid infrastructure, and active support staff, the college received a B+ grade from NAAC in both 2007 and 2016.
