Gobinda Prasad Mahavidyalaya was established in 1985 to pay homage to the sacred memory of Late Gobinda Prasad Singha, an eminent freedom fighter and social worker of Bankura District, with a noble purpose of extending higher education among the poor and backward people of the locality.The college was granted temporary affiliation by the University of Burdwan on 20.09.1985 which approved its permanent affiliation on 30.08.1988. The college was included under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 on 22.08.1989 and was duly registered under section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 on 22.08.1989.

The college is situated in the area of Gangajalghati Panchayet Samiti of the Reserved Constituency (SC) of Bishnupur Loksabha and Barjora Assembly of West Bengal. It is an output of long term inputs injected by the eminent social workers and educationists, MPs, MLAs and noble hearted people of the locality to cater the needs of higher education in a backward area of Bankura district. It was formally inaugurated by late Aswini Raj, an eminent freedom fighter, social worker and educationist of the time.

Initially the University of Burdwan approved its affilation for giving instruction in 6 pass courses (General Course) subjects viz. English, Bengali, History, Economics, Political Science and Philosophy. Afterwords the affiliation was gradually extended to the studies of History (hons.), English (hons.), Bengali (hons.), Mathematics (pass), Geography (gen.), Geography (hons.) and Sanskrit (gen.). Now the college has taken due intiative to enact Computer Science (General), Pol-Science (hons.) and Philosiphy (hons.)

Admission :-

Online admission procedure is strictly followed as per merit following the latest university norms.
For General Courses : Passed in H.S./ Equiv. examination.
For Hons. Courses : At least 45% marks in aggregate in H.S./ Equiv. exmination and 45% marks in proposed Hons. subject.

  1. Seats are reserved as per Govt. Rules.
  2. 5% relaxation of marks of Hons. subjects in applicable for reserved candidates only.
  3. Aggregate for index will be calculated taking into account of two compulsory languages and three best optional/ elective subjects and the proposed Hons. Subject according to the marks obtained in H.S./ Equiv examination. Calculation will be done on percentage of marks of each subject.

Attendance Rules

  1. Collegiate Candidates: Students are required to attend at least at 75% of the total lectures delivered to them in the session and then they will be eligible to appear at the University Examination.
  2. Non-Collegiate Candidates: The students whose percentage of class attendence is 60% and above but below 75% of the total lectures delivered to them in the session will be treated as non-collegiate candidate. They be sent up to the university examination if their short percentage is condoned by the university authority.
  3. Dis-Collegiate Candidates: The candidate whose percentage of class attendence falls below 60% of the total lectures delivered to them in the session will be treated as dis-collegiae candidate. They will not be eligible to appear at the university examination. Then may take re-admission.

The claim for retaining the Hons. Subject of a student will stand cancelled without any notice if the attendence of such students of first year Hons. Classes of the first thirty teaching days falls below 75% in the particular Hons. subject concerned. 


The academic session starts from 1st July of the year and ends on the 30th June of the following year. 

Code Of Conduct

Students are to maintain strict rules and regulations and discipline in and around the college campus. They should maintain the healthy atmosphere of the college and coordial relationship among the students, teachers, non-teaching staff and the college authority concerned. Any type of misconduct and violation of the rules and regulations of the college is subject to fine and punishment. They should attend their classes regularly and any sort of absence would be duly informed to the Principal in advance. They should pay their fees in due time, otherwise, fine as fixed by the college would have to be paid.

Infrastructure :-

The college possesses a sprawling area consisting of 20 acres of land. We have a small college building of nearly 14 thousand square feet at present and approaching to cover a wider area by constructing new building which are going to be executed very soon. Recently the University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended its all round assistance for developing the infrastructural facilities, academic improvement and in campus activity of the college.

Free Studentship & Aid Fund :-

The college provides financial assistance in the form of free studentship and aid fund to a good number of poor, meritorious and regular students. The students welfare committee is functioning smoothly for the purpose.
