Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, Kolkata Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics was established in 1949 as a post-graduate teaching and research department of the University of Calcutta. This is the first University department in India engaged in teaching and research in Electronics, Communication, Computers and all branches of Radio Science.It is affiliated to University of Calcutta.It is private approved UGC, AICTE.
Prof.S.K.Mitra, Scientist who discovered ‘Active Nitrogen Glow' in Ionosphere is the fouder of the institute.
In 1963, it was recognized by the University Gants Commission as a Centre of Advanced Study.It is a unique distinction amongst all such Centres in the country that is still earned by the Department. It has been given the status of Networking Resource Centre in Physical Science, one amongst ten such Centres created by the UGC in the country. Other National Centres also exist in the department.
The department has collaboration in teaching and research with a number of institutions in India and abroad. The ex-students of this department have served/ are serving as Vice Chancellors, Directors of IITs and other Central Government academic/research institutions, Professors and Aministrators in India and abroad. In addition, many of alumni members have earned prestigious awards for academic achievements.
It will benefit the students in understanding the recent technical developments in engineering science through IEEE organized workshops & Seminars.
This is one department which has been granted financial assistance from World Bank & other International Organizations under TEQIP Program.
The institute has allied with regional institutes of Kolkata and North-eastern states to exchange training programs and knowledge. Also, it helps its students to complete their summer internships and projects in these institutes under NRCPS Program.
Its students have made the institute proud by acquiring esteemed positions in Colleges, Universities, and Government institutions in India and abroad.
