Medical education in the oldest living city of the world, Varanasi, dates from the days of Sushruta. Here lies the history of Medical education and establishment in India. Sushruta was the first to perform cadaver dissections and described several operating instruments and surgical operations. Therefore, here we keep a continuation of this historical perspective that Medical education in BHU took roots in 1920 with the establishment of Department of Ayurveda under Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922-1927).

Under the influence of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji, Seth Mathuradas Vissanji Khimji of Bombay donated a sum of Rs.1.5 Lacs for the Ayurvedic College. This was further made larger by donations from Shri D.S. Dev Shankar Dave of Kathiawar and in the year 1924-25, Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was established.

Institute of Medical Sciences Highlights:

In 1960 Professor K.N. Uduppa as its founder principal and the Ayurvedic College was converted into the College of Medical Sciences. There were 10 Departments in the College of Medical Sciences  - 1 in Indian Medicine and 9 in Modern Medicine. In 1963, MBBS training was recognized both by the General Medical Council, U.K. and Medical Council of India. The Post Graduate Institute of Indian Medicine (since 1963) was merged with Institute of Medical Sciences established in 1971. In College of Medical Sciences, the postgraduate medical education started as an in-service program in 1963 (3 years after the establishment of Medical College), then this took the form of a formal training program in 1971 after due permission from the Visitor of the BHU i.e., the President of India. Later College of Medical Sciences upgraded to Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971. In 1976, 10 Superspecialties went on to further growth for postgraduate education continued with approval of DM and MCh course. In 1978, the existing faculties were bifurcated into the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Ayurveda to facilitate their independent growth.

Institute of Medical Sciences Ranking and Advancements:

Banaras Hindu University is among top-rated universities nationally as rated by NIRF whereas  IMS Varanasi has been ranked 6th among the top Medical Colleges in India. IMS Varanasi and SSH are the most significant institutions in western Bihar region and eastern UP. Book Release with title, Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics, 1st South Asia Edition, Edited by O.P. Mishra, Shakuntala S. Prabhu, Surjit Singh was held on 14th of November 2016 at eleven in the morning in K. N. Udupa Auditorium by Prof. V. K. Shukla, Director, IMS, Varanasi.

In the last year, following and many more development works have been completed in the IMS & S.S. Hospital:

• A 324 bedded Trauma Block of Rs 73 Crore, including super speciality services is about to come up very shortly at the foundation site of the University under Pradhan Mantri Swastha Suraksha Yojana, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India.
• Installation of the Electron Microscope in the lab.
• Starting 64 Slice CT Scan radiological Services.
• On the 9th May 2008 IDSP(Integrated Disease Surveillance Project) established and started functioning, the project is funded by World Bank. The equipment includes the Antenna and related AV devices electronics.
• Inauguration of 'Annapurna Sewa Bhojanalayin'>Strating Child Survival Resource Centre (UNICEF).
• Installation of OR-1 in Pediatric Surgery.
• Opening of second Swachchha Rasoi Ghar (SRG) facility with the help of Bharat Petroleum to provide the cooking gas facility to the patient attendants @ RS.5/- per hour on 14-6-2006.
• Staring of IMS website.
• Starting and elevating of ART Centre to Centre of Excellence.

Institute of Medical Sciences Courses:

The Institute of Medical Sciences Varanasi at present has three major faculties- Medicine, Ayurveda & Dental Sciences. Additionally, IOMS have College of Nursing, Center for Experimental Medicine and Surgery, Molecular Biology Unit, Library, Photo & Art Section, Auditorium, Central Workshop and Animal House. IOMS Ayurveda:

In 1927, separately Ayurvedic College was started for imparting training in both in Modern Medical Sciences and Ayurveda. The Ayurvedic college' was converted into the College of Medical Sciences in 1960 under the leadership of Prof. K. N. Udupa. With practice in the ayurvedic, Institute of Medical Sciences Varanasi also aims at to develop a pattern in Ayurvedic education, research and health services with assimilation and synthesis of latest developments in the scientific field, for the purpose of education, research and health care.

IOMS Medicine:

In the Medicine department particularly each department has Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Special Courses like Anatomy 02 Workshops, Biochemistry 01 training programme, Cardiology 04 Workshops, Community Medicine 01 Workshop etc.

IOMS Nursing:

The school of Nursing, S.S. Hospital is affiliated to the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU. The recognition and training are as per the syllabus of the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. The teaching faculty for the College of Nursing, as per the recommendations of Indian Nursing Council includes Principal and Vice-Principal with 5 tutors. In the College of Nursing Teaching faculty of the Institute of Medical Sciences also delivers lectures for the nursing student in special areas.

Institute of Medical Sciences Facilities Cobalt Therapy, Haemodialysis, Lithotripsy (ESWL), Renal Transplantation, 16 Bedded Modern ICU, Cardiac Pace Maker Lab, Cardiac Cath Lab, Open Heart Surgery, Neonatology / Neo-Natal Surgery ICU, Dental services (A newly constructed building at Sthapana sthal parisar near Sthapana sthal), Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Service,Video Endoscopy & Paediatric Urology Unit, Neuro Navigation system, Neuro endoscopy, Eye Bank & Corneal transplant, Urodynamic LAB, Blood Component Therapy, Ayurvedic Panchkarma Therapy and Leech Therapy, Kshar Sutra Therapy, Implementation of HMIS through which admission ticket, collection of procedure / investigation charges in regard to Indoor and OPD patients. 24 x 7 hours USG facility. 400 MTS engaged through outsourcing for hospital services along with
50 Safaiwala. Regional Resource Centre of Telemedicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Emergency Rehabilitation and Skill Centre, Advanced Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi –Adoption of 100 villages in Varanasi District, Increase in Grant and bed strength (1560 beds) of S.S. Hospital. MBBS, BAMS and MD/MS (Ay.) Courses got recognized by MCI and CCIM, respectively, 21 MD/MS and 3 DM/M.Ch subjects in the Faculty of Medicine got recognized by MCI.
93 MD/MS seats in Faculty of Medicine increased from existing 134 to 168. About 140 new Faculty was appointed at different cadres in Faculty of Medicine, Dental Sciences, Ayurveda and College of Nursing to further strengthen the teaching, clinical and research activities in the Institute. 500 Nursing staff has been sanctioned for S. S. Hospital, IMS to facilitate better patient care.

Institute of Medical Sciences Placements:

Institute of Medical Sciences Placement cell provides opportunities that are very good and very immense. Also, IOMS Varanasi has the Madan Mohan Malviya hospital attached to it, where the students get placed after the completion of their studies. Students get other placement opportunities also. IOMS Placement percentage is more than 90% every year. The internship is necessary for the medical school students, and the students are facilitated to their respective internship field or are placed by the IOMS, and they offer a stipend around Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 which is decent enough.

1. How is the placement record of IOMS?
   - 60% of the students got the internship from the college, 40% of the students applied outside of the college. The placement cell is efficient. Many companies visit the campus for placements.
2. What is the average salary range if students get jobs?
   - On an average (approximately), the stipend/salary availed is 80,000-1.5lacs post PG and 20-40,000-80,000 post MBBS from BHU.
3. How are the hostel facilities?
   - The hostels are quite good and spacious enough. All hostels have enough bathrooms and multiple messes to have an option with mess food. Mess food is hygienic and costs about 2500 - 3000. All hostels have their separate own Canteens.

Course-wise eligibility criteria are mentioned below. IOMS Cutoffs are according to the rules & regulations of NTA, may vary for different courses. 

Institute of Medical Sciences Admission:

For Admission in UG & PG courses, the candidate can apply to the college through their NEET-UG/ NEET-PG Medical Scorecard. The candidate will have to register on the official website with a valid NEET Score and follow the further instructions for the counselling process below is the schedule of NEET (UG/PG) 2020 examination to be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) from December 2019 to June 2020. NEET 2020 examination will be conducted in different cities at All India level.

Institute of Medical Sciences Hostel Details:

Institute of Medical Sciences Varanasi Uttar Pradesh Hostel facilities are quite good and spacious enough. In 1st-year hostel alloted are with 2 occupancies with all sorts of requirements, in 2nd-year hostels alloted are with 2 or 3 occupancies depends on hostel alloted, in 3rd year again 2 occupancies hostels and in 4th year or final year and internships hostels alloted is single occupancy. All hostels have enough bathrooms and multiple messes to have an option with mess food. Mess food costs about 2500 - 3000. All hostels have their separate own Canteens. The campus is exceptionally huge and beautiful with artistic and aesthetic values. The laboratories are awesome. The equipment for the experiments is up-to-date. The entire campus has the Wi-Fi facility including the classrooms, the labs, the hostels, etc. The food quality is decent enough. Also, we have veg as well as the non-veg menu, and the milk is also provided. The medical facilities are great and are also available for your friends and families. The hostel rooms are good, ventilated, lighted and spacious. Its library is of the international level and is one of the best in entire Asia.
