Admission to these programmes is made once a year in July through Joint Entrance Examination-Main [JEE-Main] and Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced [JEE- Advanced] conducted on an All India level in April and May by CBSE and IITs respectively
The minimum academic qualification for appearing in JEE is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 system or its equivalent with 60% marks
For SC/ ST/ PD1 candidates the marks should be 55% in the examination
The candidates must not be more than 25 years of age [30 years for SC/ ST/ PD] candidates on October 1 in the year of admission
The candidate must not be or have been a registered student in any IIT or IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISM, Dhanbad
Successful candidates are offered a choice of the stream on the basis of All-India rank in JEE and preferences of the candidate
Candidates for admission through these various competitive examinations should be Indian citizens
Awards given by the Institute are President's Gold Medal to the student getting the highest CPI in the graduating class, Director's Gold Medal to the student for the best all-around performance and leadership, Proficiency Medals to the students for doing the best BTech project work in each department.

Merit-cum-means scholarships given by alumni of IIT Kanpur	Only 50 students of particular department can avail this scholarship The amount offered is Rs. 2000 per month for a duration of 10 months The parent's annual income should be within certain limits [currently Rs 4.50 Lakhs]
Sports Scholarships	Only 20 sports students can avail this scholarship The amount offered is Rs.500 per month for nine months
