Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Garhwal is a Central University in accordance with the Central University Act 2009 and was established. It is named after the politician Late Shri Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna. Since its emergence, HNBGU is committed to achieve academic excellence and contribute to community development.

The University is located in Srinagar and is situated in the foothills of the River Alaknanda. It has three other campuses which are located at Chauras, Pauri and Tehri. School of Agriculture and Allied Science:

Department of Forestry and Natural Sources:

Department of forestry and natural resources spread over a 2376.33-meter square. HNBG department of forestry and natural sources has a library. This library spreads across the 1300.00-meter square. This department also has a library. This library has the latest edition of books. It contains national and international journals.

Department of forestry and natural sources provides the latest computer labs for the students. The department has also been recognized by DST-FIST in 2007, which has further supported and helped in strengthening the department. This department had more than 20 students who were awarded a D.Phil degree in Forestry by the University.

The department faculty published more than 250 research papers in national and international journals. Hemwatiwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University encourages the departments to conduct the programs related to forestry. 

Department of Horticulture:

Department of horticulture established in 1982. This department offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. Garhwal University helped the university to establish the Horticulture Research Centre [HRC] for the practical classes for the students. This department provides several activities to the students.

The Department has also undertaken Avenue plantation and overall beautification of the Chauras Campus of the University as an activity of Landscaping. Faculty members of the departments published 8 research papers. And also took part in several seminars, workshops and conferences. The department has also organized 02 training/extension programs.

Department of Rural Technology:

The Department of rural technology was introduced in 1998. This department has an intention to carry out teaching, research, presentation, training and increase activities for developing more effective tools using relevant and original technology, skill-oriented program and knowledge of rural people for the overall upliftment of rural artisans and cottage industries for sustainable rural development and livelihood improvements.   

The department of rural technology offers the postgraduate program in rural technology. This department also conduct various programs based on the topic of development of rural areas. Faculty members of these departments also published the 6 research papers and 1 book. They also participated in 4 seminars and training programs. The department has 01 ongoing research projects.

Department of Seed Science and Technology:

Department offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. The faculty members have published 08 research papers and have participated in 02 seminars during the year 2011-12.

School of Science:

Department of Chemistry:

Department of chemistry was established in 1973. This department runs the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. This department has published more than 60 research papers in national and international journals. These research activities mainly based on the chemical analysis of the medical plants Himalayan region for the isolation and characterization of bioactive.

Department of Home Science:

The department of home science was established in 1980 at an undergraduate level. Then the department introduced the postgraduate level in 1997. The academic activities and research works are done by the faculty have been published in many journals. The faculty also participates in various seminars, conferences and workshops.

The Department of MatHemwatitics came into existence as a part of Garhwal University in the year 1973. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This department of matHemwatitics also offers a Ph.D. in pure matHemwatitics and applied matHemwatitics.

Department of Physics:

The physics department was founded in 1962. The department is well equipped for research work with instruments like Fluorescence Spectro Photometer, UV and Visible Spectroscopy, Ultrasonic interferometer, High-Temperature Furnace, Mossbauer Effect and Gamma-ray spectrometer.

The department came into existence in 2007. It offers two years PG course in M.Sc. This course is suitable and useful to those working in the industry and research laboratories and wants to develop their knowledge in the design and construction of drugs, herbal medicine formulation and the pharmacological issues that arise.

Department of MatHemwatitics:

The Department of MatHemwatitics came into existence as a part of Garhwal University in the year 1973. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This department of matHemwatitics also offers a Ph.D. in pure matHemwatitics and applied matHemwatitics.

Department of Commerce came into existence in the year 1976. The department is working hard to provide the best-qualified education to the students. This department provides a computer lab with an internet facility for the students and staff.

Department of Defence and Strategic Studies: 

The Department of defense and strategic studies was established in 1979. The department offers B.A and B.Sc courses. The faculty members are actively attending seminars, symposia, workshops and lectures. The center subscribes to various journals on national and international affairs.

Department of Geology:

This department of geology was established in 1975. Department offers special papers like sedimentology, environmental geology, glaciology, remote sensing, micropaleontology and petroleum geology at the postgraduate level. The faculty members have published 16 research papers in journals of national and international repute and have participated in 04 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences. 

Department of Geography:

It was established in 1973. The faculty members have published 08 research papers. The department of geography published 03 books and has also competed in 23 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences. The department also organized the 1 National Seminar during the year. At present, the department is contributing significantly to regional development through research in areas like sustainable use of natural resources, rural development, ecological & environmental conservation, socio-economic impact assessment, and G.I.S. application.

Department of Remote Sensing and GIS:

Department of Remote Sensing and GIS was established in 2007 at the Chauras campus of the University. The Department proposes a two-year Post-graduate course in Remote Sensing and GIS. The Department has established a basic base with state of art facilities to impart education in Remote Sensing.

Department of Naturopathy and Yoga:

Department of Yoga established on 27/11/1998 under the UGC Guidelines for Promotion of Yoga Education, Practice and positive health in this University. The main idea of the Yoga Department is the coordination of spiritual events of Yoga with modern science with a view to developing the scientific-cum-spiritual character that would possibly satisfy the majority of mankind.

Department of Physical Science:

The faculty of the department is actively involved in research in the area of physical education and sports. The department has been involved in various coaching and training appointments and also involved in sports projects such as Organization and managing in various Sports at National and International Sports Competitions. 

School of Engineering and Technology:

Department of Computer Science and Engineering:

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established in 2000. The intake for MCA and B.Tech is 38 seats in each course. The following are the qualification guidelines for admission in MCA and B.Tech.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering:

Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering has the intention to develop so as to conduct research of high quality and to develop cutting edge electronic products and technology. With this vision, the department has an aim to achieve high standards of teaching and academics to train skilled engineers and researchers to serve out nation and society.

Department of Instrumentation Engineering:

The Department of Instrumentation Engineering was established in the university in 1991. Presently, the department is offering  B. Tech. degree course in Instrumentation Engineering. The department has the major scientific tools XRD, SEM, PE loop tracer, Ellipsometer, ICP-MS; and Liquid Nitrogen Plant, as a central facility, to the researchers.  

Department of Mechanical Engineering:

This department was established in 2011 under the School of Engineering and Technology.

Department of Information Technology:

Department of Information Technology was established in 2011. Department has an establishment in the Chauras Campus of H.N.B. Garhwal University, Uttarakhand. Department of Information Technology has the idea to develop high-quality research to conduct and develop cutting edge IT products and technology. With this aim, the department has a purpose to attain high standards of teaching and academics to train skilled engineers and researchers to serve out nation and society.

School of Arts, Communication and Languages:

Department of Drawing and Paint:

This department drawing and painting was started in 1980. Students are inspired to open their creativity with independence as each student has a distinct way of expression and depiction. This department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. 

Department of English and Morden European and Other Foreign Languages:

This department is established in 1973. The faculty members have published 24 research papers and 1 book and have also participated in 3 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences. The faculty member of the department is actively engaged in the research activities sponsored by the IGC. The department also offers the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programs. 

Department of Hindi and Morden Indian Language:

This department was started in 1973. During the year 2011-12, the faculty members have published 09 research papers and 1 book. They have also participated in 05 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences.

Department of Library and Informational Science:

The Department offers a one-year Bachelor's Degree. The University is preparing to develop the IT and other amenities in the department so as to attract more students in this course. The course is being run by the contractual faculty under the direction of the course coordinator.

Department of Music:

This department was established in 1979. The department also provides research tools and guidance for a Doctoral degree. The faculty members have published 3 research papers. They have 1 research project.

Department of Sanskrit:

Department of Sanskrit offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This department organized 1 national seminar. They have one research project. The department is trying to provoke the students to shine so that they may be profited in the near future. 

School of Humanities and Social Sciences:

Department of Anthropology:

The Department of Anthropology was established in 1976. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The department allows specialization in Advanced Physical Anthropology and Advanced Social Anthropology, at the post-graduate level. The department has a well-furnished 'Museum of Himalayan Cultural Heritage', representing various dimensions of the group and rural culture of the Himalaya.

Department of Philosophy:

This department was established in 1980. The department has concentrated attention on carrying quality research work in the field of Indian and western Metaphysics, Epistemology, applied aspects of Social and Ethical Philosophy, Yoga and moral implications to the practical field. For the above purpose, the department has envisioned establishing the computer and net facility and has set up a research library.

Department of Economics:

The department of economics offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. The department aims to establish a cohesive team including faculty members, research scholars and students united together by their shared insight on diverse economic fields which can contribute constructively to the society and its economy. 

Department of Political Science:

Department of political science is one of the biggest departments in the School of Humanities and Social Science. The faculty member works hard to provide the excellent education to the students. The department has completed a number of major research projects financed by the ICSSR, UGC and other agencies.

Department of Sociology and Social Work:

It came to existence in 1994. This department has qualified trained teachers. 

Department of Bio-Chemistry:

The Department of Biochemistry was established in 2010 at the H. N. B. Garhwal University, as a center for teaching and research that absorbs large appearances of Biochemistry. The courses are suitable and beneficial to those who wish to work in industry and research laboratories and design to develop their knowledge in the expanding area of biochemistry.

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Facilities:

The university has a library which was established in 2003 which has more than 30,000 books. It has a computer center which supports the studies of MCA/ M.Sc [Comp Sc.] and the applications required in their study. The computer labs have 50 independent broadband connections. The campus also has an UGC-Infonet lab which is used to connect to other universities and to do research for various projects.

The campus also has a guest house. The university has a dispensary through which the students have access to medicine free of cost. The campus has an Analytics Instruments facility. The campus has a Women's' cell to combat sexual harassment and punishing the culprits.

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Admissions:

HNBGU intake is merit-based. For postgraduate courses, students shall have to take a written examination of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) based on the undergraduate syllabus of the concerned subject of this University. A candidate can appear in the Entrance Test for the PG Program maximum in three subjects. Candidates applying for more than one PG program need to apply separately in application form along with the directed fee.

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University facility provides separate hostels for boys as well as girls. There is one Alaknanda Girls Hostel and three Boys' hostels named as Trishul, Chaukhamba and Babu Jagjeevanram Boys' hostel. The hostel has a medical center within the hostel to assist students in case of medical emergencies. The hostel provides power backup and sufficient water supply. There is internet access across the hostel. There is a common catering facility in the hostel. The mess is kept clean and maintained by separate college staff.

The college is very good its a central university the teachers have well experience for teaching the class timing is 10:00 am to 1:00 pm its theory classes than 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm practical classes.
