Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) is known for its rich heritage of over 5 decades of providing affordable and quality education for students from remote areas of Uttarakhand. Spread over 268 acres, HNBGU is known for its well-maintained campus, residential hostel and commendable infrastructure, which provides all the basic amenities.
Although HNBGU is known for its humongous campus and infrastructure, it must improve its placement scenarios, uplift faculties quality, and provide proper guidance for master's degree students.

Affordable Variety of Courses

HNBGU offers Science, Commerce, Humanities, Law, and Education courses. MBA in Tourism is a well-known course offered at the university along with MSc Chemistry and Physics. Students need not write any entrance examination to get admission to HNBGU. HNBGU follows the syllabus suggested by the government. Students feel the syllabus must be renewed per industry standards and requirements. HNBGU attracts students from various backgrounds due to its affordable course fee and availability of scholarship facilities.

Experienced Faculties

Faculties at HNBGU are experienced in their respective fields. Students think that the few faculties are approachable and friendly. They inculcate teaching with practical examples and in the local language to make students understand the topics. HNBGU classrooms have all the modern equipment, like a projector, loudspeakers, and digital boards. Faculties use all these facilities to make teaching sessions fun and interactive. 

Postgraduate students believe that the HNBGU faculties need more support for final-year projects, and they have minimal knowledge about modern-day technology. Also, a few past students believe that only some faculties are punctual and often miss out on completing the syllabus.

Modern Infrastructure

One of the salient features of HNBGU is its well-developed infrastructure. HNBGU has constantly developed its infrastructure throughout its existence. Spacious classrooms with all the modern teaching tools like Wi-Fi, projectors, loudspeakers, digital boards, and comfortable seating arrangements are some of the salient features of HNBGU infrastructure. A vast library with a massive collection of books, e-books, and journals is easily accessible to students. 

Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, HNBGU is a vast campus known for its serene beauty. The campus has residential hostel facilities, and it is well-lit at night. The entire campus is under CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety of students. Since most KNBGU students are from their native state, the campus has a friendly environment.  

HNBGU infrastructure comprises facilities like a sports area, well-equipped laboratories, an auditorium, an emergency hospital, and a canteen. Students often show their disappointment regarding the canteen facilities as they remain closed most of the time. Students are advised to make use of all the facilities provided by HNGBU.

Residential Hostel Facilities

HNGBU provides residential hostel facilities for its students. HNBGU hostel rooms are vast, with Wi-Fi connectivity, a single bed, chair, table, and cupboard provided. Students who need hostel facilities must apply as early as possible. The hostel room allotment is based on the availability of rooms. 

The hostel mess provides quantity and quality food. The student committee will look after all the mess-related activities. The repetitive food menu at the HNBGU hostel often disappoints students. 

Students can also opt for Paying Guest (PGs) available off-campus. PGs are spread across the city and are convenient. High rent, around INR 10,000 to INR 12,000, bothers students who want to avoid staying in a hostel.

Depleting Placements

The existence of 5 decades does not add any weightage to the HNGBU placements. Students often need to be more satisfied with the depleting placement records of HNGBU. While there are no placements for UG courses like BCom, BBA, BSc, and BA, NIRF reported that the 2023 placement at HNGBU offered a maximum package of INR 2.9L for UG courses and INR 5.2L for PG courses. 

Postgraduate students believe there needs to be proper support from the faculties during the projects and placements. Also, HNBGU needs to provide internship opportunities for students, which hinders placement opportunities in the future.

Life at HNBGU

The campus life at HNGBU is vibrant and happening. The environment at the HNGBU campus is friendly, and students support each other. Academic and cultural clubs conduct events throughout the year. Since most of the students are from their native state, there is no language barrier on the campus. As the HNGBU campus has residential hostel facilities, the campus is well-lit at night and under CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety of students. 

Students must maintain 75% attendance to be eligible for annual exams. Apart from this, few strict rules and regulations are imposed on students. Since the campus is situated closer to the Himalayas, it will be severely cold during the winter. Hence, students do not need to follow any strict dress code.

However, management students must wear formal whenever asked. Students are advised not to indulge in any political activities that happen on campus, which will hamper their campus life and academics.

Is HNBGU Worth It? 

HNGBU has designed courses per the higher education needs of this remote and geographically rugged region of Uttarakhand. Though the placement scenarios are deteriorating, HNBGU is an excellent place to pursue general degrees. Students must examine the pros and cons of HNBGU before applying.
