ACADEMICS & FACULTY

Class timings - 9.30am to 4.30pm. There are 3 internal assessment tests and a semester exam once for a period of 6 months. Quality and method of teaching are not so overwhelming but quite good.


CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS

Every department have their corresponding societies. Rest there are social clubs includes rotary and lions club. Literary clubs includes Tamil and English literary association. Arts, dance and music clubs. Gecofest is the main cultural event.

As I have already mentioned, academics is very good in this college. It has very good laboratories and instruments.it provides awesome practical knowledge.

It has lots of clubs and societies.it would greatly higher our knowledge. It has Lion's club, Rotrary club, English and literary association, photography club, Tamil club,etc..

About Government College of Engineering, [GCE] Salem

The Government College of Engineering, Salem in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, is an engineering education center in the state ofTamil Nadu. It is one of the three institutions offering Metallurgical Engineering as a full-time course in Tamil Nadu.

GCE-Salem was started during the Third Plan period in 1966 and is located on a beautiful site surrounded by hills. Its area is 1.62 square kilometres (400 acres). This is the third government engineering institution formed in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of students was selected for 1966 for courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. In 1973 themetallurgical engineering branch was started. The Electronics Engineering and Communication Engineering branch was introduced in 1985. Computer science and engineering was started in 2001. All the undergraduate courses except Computer Science and Engineering are accredited by NBA.

Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, was started during the Third Five year plan in the year 1966 and is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by hills under the initiation of a Legend Padmashree Muthaiyan. This was then the Third Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of students was selected for the academic year 1966-1967 for course in Civil. Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. In the year 1973-74, the Metallurgical engineering branch was started. Electronics and Communication branch was introduced in the year 1985-86. Computer Science Engineering course was introduced in the year 2001.

M.E.,(Structural Engineering), M.E., Mechanical(Thermal Engineering), M.E., Electrical and Electronics(Power Electronics & Drives) and M.E., Metallurgy (welding Technology) are offered as self supporting course. Part time B.E. courses are also offered in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronical Engineering and Electrical and Communication Engineering. The department of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Chemistry and Maths have been granted recognition for guiding research work leading to Ph.D. under Anna University.

The college is a Regional Center for Anna University for Ph.D., and M.S., programs. The college is the Zonal Office for the conduct of Anna University Examination in the 73 colleges belonging to this Zonal. Our Institution is one of the eleven technical Institution in Tamil Nadu selected for World Bank Financial Assistance under Technical Education Quality Improvement Program(TEQIP).The Institution has recevied an approval for a sum of Rs.10,967cores as life time allocation for the project implementation spread over a period of four years from 2003 to 2007.Based on the performance on the Phase I a grant of Rs. 4 Crores has been given to build the quality of the Technical Education.

Planetarium

The planetarium at Government College of Engineering,Salem-11 was commissioned in the year 1979.The celestial sky project on a dome and its daily apparent motion is stimulated by using special equipment.A 'Star Carrier' with thirty one high quality optical projection all over its surface projects the different section of the sky with stars in a breath taking display of the glorious night sky.The small dome facilities effective teaching.It can accomodate 55 members at a sitting.Schools,Colleges,Clubs and the gener


  • The placement and Training Cell is headed by the Placement Officer, Dr. V. Rajkumar / Associate Professor – Civil Department. The Student Coordinators are elected from each department during their pre-final year and the activities of the Placement and Training Cell are taken care of by them.
