Established in 1916, the University of Mysore (UoM)  is the first University of Karnataka and the first University set during British rule in India. Mysore University is known for its rich heritage and longevity. UoM is known for its well-maintained vast campus, hostels and commendable infrastructure, which provides all the basic amenities.

Variety of Affordable Courses

The University of Mysore offers a humongous variety of courses. UoM offers over 300 lectures under undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. Admissions to these courses are based on merit, entrance exams conducted by the Karnataka Exam Authority and by the University of Mysore itself.

UoM curriculum is based on industry-related topics and gets updated as required. Faculties use real-life examples and case studies to teach the subjects. Also, faculties use projectors and digital boards to make their classroom sessions interactive and impactful.

Master programmes in arts, commerce, and economics offered by UoM are famous and attract students from various countries. Undergraduate programmes offered in Kannada and English are also renowned and valuable for their quality and weightage. 

Also, UoM aims to provide quality and affordable education for students from various backgrounds. UoM, in association with the Government of Karnataka, offers exciting student scholarships.

Experienced Faculties

One of the significant strengths of UoM is its experienced and expert faculties. UoM has renowned faculties who have been serving for a very long time. Likewise, young and talented faculty members are experts in their respective fields. 

Faculties teach and communicate in English as UoM has students from various parts of the country and the world. Faculties use the local language, Kannada, to make students understand complex topics. Yet, English is predominantly used in and out of the classroom. 

UoM updates the curriculum based on the current requirements. Faculties have recently started using projectors to make their teaching impactful and interactive. A few past students think that a few faculties are impractical to classes and fail to complete the syllabus within the given timeline.

Renowned Infrastructure

The University of Mysore is known for its century-old infrastructure. UoM's main campus in Mysore is spread over 739 acres. UoM has separate buildings for each specific subject. The campus is lush green, and the basic amenities are included. UoM library is considered to be one of the biggest in the state of Karnataka.

More than 75,000 books, 18,000 e-books and 7,500 e-journals are available at the UoM library. Students can access the library through digital platforms whenever needed. 

The UoM campus is under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety of students. Solar-powered lights are used to illuminate the campus at night. The UoM main campus, known as 'Manasagangothri', has hostels for both boys and girls. The UoM classrooms are vast and well-equipped with all basic amenities. All the classrooms have projectors and loudspeaker facilities.

UoM has dedicated indoor and outdoor sports avenues. The Mysore University has an international standard cricket stadium and athletic grounds. Students are advised to make use of all facilities provided.

Commendable Hostel Facilities

The UoM has eight hostels on the campus. The hostel rooms are vast and well equipped with all the basic facilities like beds, chairs, study tables, cupboards etc. 

The hostel fee is affordable. The UoM hostel mess provides quality and hygienic food. The hostel mess affairs are looked after by UoM officials. International students often stay in a rented house and cook for themselves. Other state students might need to adjust to the local cuisine prepared at the UoM mess. They can opt to get food from external food service providers.

All the UoM hostels are under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety of students. The UoM hostel premises have Wi-fi facilities, solar-powered water heaters, lights and more. The UoM hostel rooms will be filled based on merit and a first-come, first-serve basis.

Students can opt out of campus in various Paying Guest (PGs) rooms near the University. The PG rent is around 5000 to 8000, which is affordable as they provide all the basic facilities.

Fluctuating Placements

Having the best student life and an excellent place to study, like the University of Mysore, takes a lot of work. Having a rich heritage, UoM has gifted some notable personalities to society. However, the placements at UoM still need to be fixed. The maximum package at UoM for the UG course is 3.6 LPA, and the minimum is 1.7 LPA. 

Though UoM provides placement training to students through its Centre for Proficiency Development and Placement Services (CPDPS), top recruiting companies show the slightest interest in hiring. 

UoM faculties help students during their placements and also help them during their internships. Companies like Microsoft, Adobe, Amazon, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Uber, Visa Inc., Dell, and HP are major hiring companies that visited UoM for placements.

Life at the University of Mysore

Situated in the cultural capital of Karnataka, life at Mysore University is pleasant and happening. Since there is a humongous diversity among the students, many cultural events will occur throughout the year. Past and present students believe that life at UoM is enjoyable as no strict rules and regulations are imposed. 

Students-oriented committees conduct various cultural and extracurricular activities throughout the year. Students are advised to actively participate in all the events. The annual UoM Fest is one of the noted events in Mysore. Students must maintain 75% attendance to be eligible for semester examinations. There is no uniform for any courses at the University of Mysore. 

Is the University of Mysore Worth it?

Renowned infrastructure, quality education, affordability, and weightage for the certificates earned by the University are some points one must strongly consider before applying for Mysore University.

Emphasizing placements and inviting top recruiting companies will increase the placement rate at the University of Mysore. Students must consider the fluctuating placement scenarios before applying to the University of Mysore.
