Shivaji University, Kolhapur is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Established in 1962, the name of the University is named in the memory of the Great Maratha Warrior and the founder of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. The inauguration of the Shivaji University was done by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The students are studying in 280 Shivaji affiliated colleges and recognized institutes and there are 34 Post-graduate Departments currently. In that century, Kolhapur became one of the leading cities to give educational opportunities for all classes and communities of South-Western Maharashtra and Northern parts of Karnataka. The college always aimed for making opportunities for higher studies for rural youth for the growth and development of the region.

Shivaji University raised its standard of teaching and research by taking various steps to make the University to global standards by introducing higher studies and research in the areas like Industrial Chemistry, Space Science, Environmental Science, and all the areas included in basic Science disciplines. The Department of Physics has been recognized as the Department of Research Support by UGC for its Special Assistance Programs. The University has also introduced the University-Industry Interaction Cell and also a Center for Women's Studies and extension activities that is the indication of change. The Department of Economics also for its Special Assistance Programme has been selected by UGC and the other Departments also offering courses in areas like Environmental Science.

SUK has established a unique scheme for the meritious students called 'Shivaji University Merit Scholarship' offering 500 scholarships and also initiated research fellowship for Ph.D. students in the PG Departments. This is the first University to introduce such a scheme in India. The excellence of the University made it recognized by UGC, DST, DBT and the academic and pursuit of excellence made it facilitated by efficient administration. The organizational structure of the University is based on the provisions in the Maharashtra University Act 1994 & rules under this Act. The authorities of SUK ARE the Senate, Management Council, Academic Council, the faculty, the Board of College & University Development, the Board of Directors, the Board of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Board of Examination, the Board of Adult & Continuing Education & Extension Services, the Students Council & such other bodies.

Shivaji University Admissions are based on merit and provide UG, PG, Diploma, and Certification Programs to the interested students who wish to pursue higher education. The University has approximately 80 courses ranging from Science, Humanities, Commerce, Law, and Engineering. This University is dedicated to promote and foster a culture of high-quality teaching and learning and to serving needs by inspiring, generating, and advance excellence in research and augmentation activities. Moreover, the Institute meets the social, cultural, educational, and economic needs of the region as well as the country. The program Universal Human Value Education covers topics such as Moral Capabilities, the world in Transition, Attraction to beauty/perfection, thirst for knowledge, morality & spirituality, the oneness of mankind. The objective of this program is to build up experimental learning to improve the participant's capabilities and to teach them the practicing service of mankind and encouraging social transformation.

  • SUK has a museum on the campus named 'V.S. Khandekar Memorial Museum' to pay homage to the literary contribution of Padmabhushan V.S. Khandekar, the first author in Marathi Literature to be honored with prestigious Dnyanpeeth Award.

The various activities performed in the University are:

  • The Industry Interaction Cell conduct activities such as university-industry meetings, guest lectures, interactive workshops, conferences, seminars, research work, industrial training, industry visit, technical discussion, brainstorming sessions, etc.
  • Department of life long learning and extension conduct field outreach activities that make people aware of the problems of life such as education of dropouts, child laborers, health, adolescent education, new techniques of agriculture, women's health, etc.
  • Centre for Community Development offers skill development programs, it is one of the extension activities that bring university and society together. The programs include workshops, community development projects, in-house certificate courses to make aware of the society.
  • The Department of Social Development conducts various students oriented programs to make opportunities for the students and make the students participate in the activities to show their hidden talent; activities include cultural activities, debates, moot courts, etc.
  • The National Service Scheme established by S. Radhakrishnan was to volunteer national service and to consider social service as a prerequisite for graduation. This aims to understand the community and its relationship, solve the problems of the community, etc.

Shivaji University has Academic Support Sevice Units for the central facilities of the campus. There are different cells and centers at the University:

  • The University Science Instrumentation Center is to produce in-house central facilities such as maintaining and repairing scientific instruments, organizing workshops and training programs for the university departments.
  • There is a library center named Barr. Balasaheb Kharadekar Knowledge Resource Center, one of the major libraries in South Maharashtra that provides the educational needs of students, staff and other visitors from other universities/institutes.

  • Bachelor’s degree in any subject with 50% marks (Reservation as per notified norms).
  • Candidates are advised to go through the topics in their Bachelor level of education and before for a better understanding of the topics and to successfully crack the entrance examinations.

  • Candidates who have passed Bachelor of Pharmacy with not less than 50% aggregate marks, of any recognized University or any other Institute are eligible for admission to the Master of Pharmacy Programmes.
  • For SC/ ST candidates, the eligibility is a pass in the B.Pharm degree Programme.
  • The basic eligibility for M.Phil is to have a master's degree in the subject chosen with the minimum marks of 55% in the respective subject.
  • Entrance Exams are held all over India by various institutions and universities for admission in the course. NET, SET, and other equivalent national level exams are relevant.
  • Candidates must have passed Bachelor of Social Work degree from a recognized Institute.
  • Candidates who have a Bachelor's degree in Humanities/ Social Science/ Science/ Commerce or Management subjects are also eligible.
  • Students with a background in social work, psychology, social science, sociology, or any other related fields are given preference over others.
Masters Of Law
  • Candidates who completed their under graduation in law i.e. LLB/ B.L. degree or 5 Year LLB. degree course under 10+2+5 pattern or an equivalent degree from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks in the aggregate (50% in case of reserved Categories, i.e., S.C./ S.T./ Persons with Disability).
  • Certain seats are allocated to Foreign Nationals. As per NALSAR, Foreign Nationals are exempted from taking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
  • Candidate must possess 50% marks in aggregate at 10+2 level or equivalent with Mathematics or 10+3 years Diploma in any stream recognized by Central/State Governments with 50% aggregate marks or International Baccalaureate Diploma (10 years of schooling) with not less than 50% marks aggregate and with Mathematics as compulsory subject of examination.
  • Candidates seeking admission to B.Arch course should have a valid NATA score obtained in National Aptitude Test in Architecture(NATA) conducted by the Council of Architecture.
  • Candidates should have English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in H.S.C. (10+2) with at least 50% marks.
  • Admission to graduate courses in dentistry is through a general, nationwide competitive examination.
  • Entrance Examinations are conducted in major cities all over India. Advertisements are given, regarding an issue of Application forms for Common Entrance Examination, important dates, etc., in all leading newspapers all over India are also notified.
  • The All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Exam conducted by the CBSE is common for both the M.B.B.S. and the Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS). The allocation of institutions is based on merit.
  • The aspirants have to appear for the Nationwide entrance exams conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the applicants applied for the Bachelor of Engineering [B.E] course.

  • The minimum qualification required for entry into B. Ed course is a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Commerce from recognized board/university with at least 50% marks.
  • Students need to appear in an entrance test conducted by the various state and Independent educational bodies and universities for admission in various teaching institutions attached to it according to the rank of the candidate in the entrance exam.

Shivaji University hostel facilities provided to the students are:

  • There are three fully furnished, spacious, and clean hostels for both boys and girls.
  • The rent of the rooms is very less as many of the students are poor, economically background.
  • All the hostels are equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure including a health center, gymnasium, library, sports, purified drinking water, power generator.
  • There are three separate mess for the girls with good quality meals with reasonable charges and is managed by the girls themselves.
  • Facilities provided to the girls in the hostel are a library, internet, complaint box, gymnasium, yoga, solar system-hot water, audio-video, medical counseling, security service, sports, toilets, etc.
  • There is a separate girls hostel for the Department of technology with facilities such as 24 Hours security, electricity in all the rooms, wifi, consumer store, etc.
  • The hostel fee is modest and accessible to all the students. 
  • There are many concessions that are given to the students and the hostel is managed by the Chief Rectors, Rectors, and wardens.
  • The college aspires to maintain impeccable discipline within the hostel.
