Patna University is the 1st and the oldest university in the Bihar. Being established in the year 1917, it acts as an affiliating and examining body for over 30 years. The area of the university covers almost 181 acres and is situated on the bank of the river Ganga. The University has 8 faculties, 10 constituent colleges and 42 departments. The university also provides distance education which includes E-Learning, Web-based learning, and EDUSAT. The university also offers students with linguistic programmes for their holistic development.

Patna University has its own Patna Medical College and Patna Dental College in the Faculty of Medicine whose management and control are with the State Government. The Institute of Psychological Research & Services, Institute of Public Administration, Institute of Music, and Institute of Library and Information Science are the 4 institutions maintained by the university.
