Established in 1917, Patna University (PU) is the seventh oldest University in India. PU offers a variety of affordable courses.The University has been a go-to option for students of Bihar to secure a degree in any discipline offered. 

Introduction of different educational courses throughout the years passing by, PU has provided some notable personalities to the country. However, students of PU often believe that the University fails to provide satisfactory placements and that age-old infrastructure needs to be developed.

Various Affordable Courses

PU offers affordable undergraduate, postgraduate, Doctorate, Diploma and certification courses under the disciplines of Science, Arts, Law, Commerce, and Management. Also, PU had its own Patna Medical College and Patna Dental College. Furthermore, PU offers distance education, which includes E-Learning, Web-based learning, and EDUSAT. 

The Patna University faculties teaching is commendable. Since there is no language barrier, the classroom interactions are fun and active. Faculties teach the topics using real life examples. The PU curriculum is based on the current industrial requirements and gets updated with time.

Students often feel that the learning would have been fun if the PU classrooms had all the modern facilities like digital boards and loudspeakers. Being the oldest University, Patna University is well known for its affordable fee structure. Students can avail themselves of the benefits of scholarships offered by PU to pay college tuition fees. 

Experienced Faculties

One of the main strengths of Patna University is its experienced and efficient faculties. Each department has faculties who are expert in their respective subjects. As most students who study at PU are from the state of Bihar, there is no communication barrier between students and faculties. Also, Patna University invites guest lecturers to share their knowledge with students, which would help them to gain additional knowledge.

Patna University faculties are punctual and conduct classes which will be very interactive, and they are friendly with students, making the sessions lively. On the contrary, past students think that faculties still use blackboards to teach, and there are no projectors installed in classrooms, which would make learning more impactful.

Unimpressive Infrastructure

Apart from affordable educational facilities, Patna University's infrastructure is unimpressive. A century-old university does not have proper basic facilities on campus. Though the vast campus has separate departments for each subject, it lacks basic amenities. 

The entire campus is under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure student safety. PU provides hostel facilities within the campus. Apart from all these facilities, PU has dedicated indoor and outdoor sports facilities and allows students to take part in sports seriously.

Many past and present students believe that the classrooms are outdated and still use blackboards to teach. The library has many books and journals but is not appropriately maintained. Additionally, there are inadequate numbers of computers for practical purposes. Classrooms must be digitalized, and all the essential amenities must be provided for students to make the University sustainable in the long run.

Moderate Hostel Facilities

Patna University has moderate 4 girls hostels and 7 boys hostels. The hostels are spacious and provide all the basic facilities like beds, study tables, cupboards, and chairs. PU hostels are huge. Girls hostel accommodates around 1,400 inmates, and the boys hostel accommodates around 2,500 inmates.

Hostel premises provide wifi facilities for the benefit of the students. Present and past inmates of the PU hostel collectively feel that the mess facilities must be improved by introducing quality and maintenance facilities. 

The PU hostel officials respond to students' complaints and requirements quickly. All the PU hostels are under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety of the students. PU does not entertain any sort of ragging in the hostel. Students must follow specific rules of the hostel imposed by the officials. According to previous and present hostel inmates, the PU hostel life is memorable, and they had the best time in the hostel.

Students can opt for paying guest (PG) facailities available near to the Patna University. With the minimum rent over INR 5,000, PGs are well maintained with all the basic amenities.

Deteriorating Placement Rates

As per the students' opinion, the placement at PU is highly disappointing. There are no placements for a few undergraduate courses and few placement opportunities for postgraduate courses. As per the official statistics, the undergraduate placement rate deteriorated by 30% from 2022 to 2021 and by 33% for postgraduate courses. Last year, the average package for undergraduate students was 3.5L per annum and 4L for postgraduate students.

Patna University also does not provide any internship opportunities for students, which hinders their final placement opportunities. Also, at the end of the academic year, most students seek job opportunities outside college placements. 

Life at Patna University

Past and present students of Patna University believe that the PU campus life is joyous and exciting. Dedicated student committees conduct various curricular and extracurricular activities throughout the year. Since most of the students are from the state of Bihar, there is not much diversity among them. The faculties and students are fluent in Hindi and local languages, so there is not much communication barrier between them.

Students must maintain at least 75% attendance to be eligible for exams. However, there are no strict rules regarding the same. Students are allowed to wear casual clothes as no uniform and dress code is imposed. Students can occupy themselves with sports and extracurricular activities as PU gives full support. 

Is Patna University Worth It?

Students who do not like to leave their native state and want to get a degree under their name are most likely to pursue education at Patna University. Being the oldest University, it offers a variety of affordable undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Experienced faculties make learning enjoyable, and students feel that campus life is worthwhile. 

However, the deteriorating placement opportunities and poor infrastructure are matters of concern among PU students. Yet, PU is a go-to option for the students of Bihar to pursue their desired degree.
